What is the most venomous New World snake? Anybody know where I can find a reliable LD50 list (subcutaneous route of envenomation preferablly). I was under the impression that the South American rattlesnake claimed that honor but looking at BGF's subcutaneous LD50 list, I see only the Mojave. How does the Golden lancehead match up with these species and corals?

One really should define "Most Venomous" when asking that question. Do you mean the that produces the most venom? The one that has the most toxic venom drop for drop? The one that is responsible for most envenomations? The one that does the most tissue damage? The most neurotoxic? The most cytotoxic? The most nephrotoxic? The highest death to bite ratio with AV? highest death to bite ratio without AV?... so many factors in that question it really can't be answered as is.

If I'm not mistaken, the tiger rattlesnake is right up there as well, altough it has a very low venom yield. P.S., went out herping last night near my home in phoenix and came across a hatchling gila monster. Man I wanted to take him home with me, however my conscience got the better of me and I just took a few photos. couldn't have been more than 6-7 inches. Just wanted to share my excitement with everyone. thx

Alright "SwampY" aka Chad. I didn't get into this hobby yesterday, so you can tone down your "I know more than you" answer. I don't mean to be snotty, I would just like to be treated with a little respect. Now with that out of the way, I mean what NEW WORLD snake has the most toxic venom PURELY FROM A MOLECULAR LEVEL? Subcutaneous (SQ) or intramuscular (IM) routes of LD50 envenomation would prove to be the most reliable in a "real" situation. IM particularly because of the length of New World viper fangs, but let us not disclude SQ routes either. Let me reiterate that I thought the South American Rattlesnake was the most toxic, but where dooes Mojave, corals, golden lancehead fall into the scheme of things?

The most venomous snake in the new world are captive Inland Taipans in zoos :p
Drop for drop I would say Mojave, Tiger, Golden Lancehead and alot of the species of coralsnake would probaly ber the most toxic. BGF has the most complete LD50 testing info known so what his list says is the best guide to go by. There are perhaps some unknown or little known species with more potent venom IN MICE but have just not been tested.
Also, some of the members of the genus Sistiurs have very potent venom! They maybe contenders too.
As for snake bite deaths, Bothrops asper is probaly number one in the new world.
For most snake bite, fatal or not, well, in the US its definately the copperhead. I am not sure about south or north of us (north hardly bieng a factor)but I would venture to buess B.asper is number one in South and Central America since they like living so close to human habbitation.
Thats bout all I got. Please dont get overly offended. I agree, you are just trying to bring up interesting subject material. However, Chad is right too. There is no way to give a definative answer to your question.
Take care,
Jeremy
