Hi,I have heard and read that the puff adder posesses mostly a cytolyton venom or it is cytotoxic(I apologize for any errors on terminology on my part) that primarily destroys tissue. My question is how exactly does it kill a human? Is it multiple factors? Also how does it kill it's normal prey? Since it's prey is small does the venom just ravage the entire body of the prey or does it attack vital internal organs? I also have the same question for Cottonmouth Venom, I know it attacks blood cells and tissue, is death in humans primarily from internal bleeding, also I know a cottonmouth's bite can cause serious tissue damage and be extremely painful, but what are the odds of death from a bite? Thanks for everything!

Dave, we once had a puff at AZP that managed to bite itself. The whole insides turned to liquid inside of the snakes skin. Almost everything inside of the skin had been digested. We literally poured it out from inside its own skin.
If was one of the most disgusting, foul smelling, nasty things to deal with that anyone had seen in many years.
It did not take all that long for the venom to do its damage. The snake bit itself on a Friday, and we poured it out on the next Sunday.

The puff bit itself reflexivly when being hooked back into the cage. Many snakes often bite themselves in feeding reflexes, but it is rarely fatal. This time it killed the heck out of the snake, and the venom seemed to keep working to digest the insides.
