Hi everyone,
I'm a Christian, a Southern Baptist and a female. I have eight snakes in my home and I work at a zoo in the herp department. Most of the people I know don't draw their fear of snakes from the Bible but from their parents. When mom freaks out because there is a snake in the yard and dad shoots it or chops it up with a hoe and a big deal is made about it, that's where fear starts. It just depends on how you are raised.
Just my two cents,
Rebecca

I agree! Kids get alot of fear of things from their parents. Of course they look up to them. Its only normal to copy their reactions. If the parents dont like snakes, good chances the kids wont like them either unless someone shows them the importance of snakes, they need to be respected.

Ah religion....A great mass of mind controled drones. More people have died in the name of "God", "Allah", and whatever other names there might be since the begining of human history. We've killed enough people, let's kill other things which are even less able to defend themselves.
Sorry for the rant. I personally believe that if there si a "God", then "He" is closer to the supposid "God of Sha'ka-ri" that we saw in Start Trek V.
Tell the christian church to do something about its' child molestation problem...
Cheers
Roger

I tend to discuss religion only with people who are willing to believe in something as opposed to professing to believe in nothing. Being Atheistic as opposed to being Agnostic is a difficult position to argue from. If you choose not to believe, why would you care if somebody else did? Actually more people have died simply because people die than anything else. A great many people have died because of and for their beliefs. A somewhat more vocal group deride and sneer at those people's sacrifices secure in the safety purchased with those deaths. It is a very comfortable society we live in. Each of us is "free" to believe what we will (at least in this country). Unfortunately, many of us believe that means we have the right to cram our beliefs down someone else's throat.
My beliefs are not open for discussion here. This is a place to discuss things about snakes. Starting arguments by telling people that what they have believed their whole life is stupid is not very productive. Is there anything more to you than starting inane arguments over your opinions?

This has nothing to do with the thread really but if you look at religion, throughout the cource of human history, crocs and yes, even snakes are more worshiped then god!!!!
Personaly, I belive in god but think the church is a load of crap(remember, the church has a very bad history, especially through the dark ages of being more ruthless then hitler! This of cource is the Catholic church)I also belive the bible is very flawed, atleast the inturpretation that we get to see. Maybe back in the time of Mosess it was pure and true but now, its been re written so many times who the hell knows what wakco made up what.
Personaly, I dont think the bible's intent was to damn all serpents for eternity but simply to use a commonly feared, unpopular animal to symbolize the devil. Back in the day, snakes im sure killed many more people then they do today and truthfully, I can not blame them, "back in the day" for dispiseing snakes. Today however, we have evolved mentaly and should quite frankly, know better(unless you live in Africa!!!LOL.
Just my thoughts.
BTW, I havent read the bible in years and even when I did skim through it I didnt get into enough to really know whats going on in there so if im missing somthing very obvious, please forgive. I will keep my stand point though on the acuracy of the bible, re written by man.
All the best and god, allha, budda or whoever bless,
Jeremy

I've been in/around church my entire life. My dad has pastored churches since before I was born (both times-some of you may get that!) I'm 31 now. I like to think at some point this has rubbed off on me. The great thing about this is that my dad always encouraged me to be open minded and to study and find the answers I needed not just take some one elses word for it...anyway I believe that the Bible being the written history/ testimony on Judeo-Christianity as much as it is in truth is also allegorical and metaphorical in some of its content...for example the parables of Christ...thus also the story of the serpent in the garden, I believe the "serpent" in the garden is actually a metaphor not actually the snakes that we know & love. Man's best description was the word that loosely translated into english from greek from hebrew unfortunatley was serpent. My 52 1/2 cents.
Peace Out,

well, brevity is shot to heck here, but i have to agree with dan (timber rattlesnake), the serpent was merely the form that satan chose to use. because satan used the serpent, God cursed it, however, i don't think He (God) ever told man to either hate, or love the serpent other than to love all His creations. as far as "Baptist" killing snakes "because they ate too many fish or for fun", i'm sure i can find just as many people (or more) from any religion or atheism that you can name that are doing the same. AND, isn't using the snake as an example here just a little bit biased, i mean come on, almost every "registered" user of this site is a reptile fan, lover, fanatic, freak, you name it we're here. how many of these same people killed a spider at anytime in their life for no other reason than it was there, or it bothered them. wasn't that one of God's creations? now i realize that i'm speaking with a few atheist and probably stepped on a few toes when referring to God's creations, but aren't you stepping on toes when the only religion you have mentioned at all is Baptist. maybe there is a website out there called venemousspiders.org, and the users of that site probably kill snakes on a regular basis but would have a fit if you killed a spider because it ate too many grasshoppers from your yard. admit it guys, there's more bias toward reptiles on this site than there is testosterone at the citadel. don't take offense, i'm right here with you, i am the blacksheep of my family because of my passion for reptiles, but i will destroy an entire fire ant colony it it's in my way or a single one stings me. do a little research, then come back and show me where Baptist are the only denomination that believes the first book of Genesis, AND that we're the only ones killing snakes. then i'll believe you have an argument.

I totally agree with many of the posts here, mostly including those by the atheists or very liberal believers. I too am an atheist, and I also tend to point the blame of people hating snakes toward the main religion people adhere to in this country (US). However, I think it's totally idiotic to base a hatred of a certain type of animal on some belief system of yours. I also find it very amusing that this same religion, in certain sects, likes to dance around and hold snakes and drink poison. Ah well, such is the intrigues of the human mind. I certainly don't knock anyone for believing in anything, for if I were to do that, I'd certainly be a hypocrite if I wanted to expect everyone to respect my beliefs. Anyway, just wanted to post to this very interesting thread. Talks on religions and beliefs and all that are always very interesting, as long as people can talk about them without getting too heated, and surprisingly enough this one didn't seem to get out of hand.
