Hi, in Wisconsin there is the possibility, actually it's a pretty good possibility that the Butler's Garter Snake will no longer be listed as a protected species and this is not good. The snake is in desperate need of protection. So if anyone is a WI resident and is interested in conserving the snake just let me know and I will get you the necassary info. Also on a grander scale I have been informed that this proposal to delist the snake has not been based on scientific fact, which obviously is a requirement to have any species that is listed as protected to be delisted, so any animal could be delisted and this may spread to other states. Thanks, take care
Sincerely,
Dave

Dave, just what kind of criteria did your Game and Fish use to decide the snake needed de-listing?
If it was not based on scientific study, what was it based on?

The DNR in Wisconsin does not want the snake delisted. The legislatures joint committee for the review of administrative rules wants the snake delisted. I believe some developers have stated that they have had some difficulty getting permission to build on habitat that the DNR has specified as snake habitat. Some of the arguments for the snake being delisted is that it is not it's own species and that it does not require as many sites as have been set aside. Take care
Sincerely,
Dave

the snake inhabits only portions of four counties in WI and other sparse populations in surrounding states, every state that the snake inhabits it is considered rare. So basically the committee feels that the snake's status as a protected animal is delaying development. The DNR is being overruled, which I think might be a first in the country, some developers feel that the DNR does not have the right to protect habitat like they do.
Sincerely,
Dave

Dave, the DNR gets run over by the legislature all the time all over the country, because the poletitions are mostly paid off and greedy, many being lawyers and land developers.
The best way to stop this if for you or your friends to run for office (difficult in big areas, but do-able in some of the smaller areas of some states), then you can have a positive effect.
Some friends of mine wanted to have Alligator farms in SE Georgia, well, they ran for the State Legislature and got elected, and introduced legislation allowing Alligator farming. And it passed, and now, you can go to Publix and buy 1 lb packages of farmed alligator meat from ``Prehistoric Ponds`` in South Georgia, and it is very good. It is especially popular for GA Bull Dog fans when they are doing tail-gate cookouts when GA plays the Florida Gators, LOL !

Like victory (LOL)... all kidding aside; it is excellent. It is chewy with a mild but distinctive flavor. Not anything like chicken...lol!
