I found a scorpion in my bathroom last night and I'm wondering how he got in, if there might be more of them (I would assume in my basement?), and how to find and dispose of any nests I might find. My husband thinks I'm paranoid and maybe that's true...but one encounter with a scorpion would probably kill my cat.

Mitchelle, the only scorpian that could kill your cat is the bark scorpian and they are only found in the Big Bend tx to Arizon area. All others are less harmfull than bees.

Michelle, is your house newly constructed, or are you in an area that is being developed? I am no expert by any means, (I have a bachelors degree in knowitallogy from BSU), but my experiences with scorpions seem to concentrate around areas being developed. I suspect that you won't have a problem for very long and Cottonmouth is right, I am not familiar with any scorpians in the southeast that are dangerous. If you die from one, it's because scorpions are like wasp and bees, you will kill yourself trying to get away from one.

Alabama's scorpions have never been known to cause a fatality. And they wouldn't kill a cat. The sting is very similar to a bee sting.

I live in Alabama too and catch the scorpions that live here a lot. They are relatively harmless. The sting is somewhat like a bee sting. They don't sting that readily either. You'd probably have to step on one to get it to sting. If you are worried about them, just shake out your shoes before you put them. Scorpions wander a lot, and they don't make nests. Scorpions have live young that will live on the mother's back until thier first molt. Most of the scorpions here can be found in rotting logs or under leaf litter outside. If you see one in the house again, just get a cup and scoop the scorpion up and dump it somewhere outside.

One of my scorpions actually just gave birth. The little ones are so tiny.
However the original poster should probably call for a termite inspection. I usually find my wild caught scorpions in logs infested with termites.

Michelle, it is very common for scorpions to be found in houses. They can easily come in from your septic tank and through the plumbing to a tub drain. That is why they are often found in bathrooms and basements with floor drains and kitchen and utility sinks.
They can also easily get under door jams and windows unless those are very tightly sealed. Aslo, if you leave a garage door open for any time, they can get into the garage, and then easily into the house.
There is really not much to worry about them, as others have said, if you step on one barefoot, the sting will hurt a lot, but is not life threatning.
If you suspect they are entering under doors or windows, then get better seals for those, and spray a Pyretherin based spray under the door jams every month or so. Flea, Tick, and Spider sprays also work well on Scorpions, as they stay effective for a long time, and repell / kill those animals.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards

well apparently the ONLY way you can get stung by a scorpion is by stepping on it...which is exactly what I did about ten minutes ago.
it felt like a bee sting but now I'm pissed and my foot is swollen and I'm definitely bombing my house for any other annoying, useless creatures.

Well, I would not say "Only," as I know of a number of folks who got stung by scorpions while sleeping, including myself.
Scorpions sometimes climb up bed sheets and folks roll over on them at night. Also, folks in sleeping bags on air mattresses or on the ground are targets.
This is fairly common in summer camps, where folk are camping in tents and cabins. I know of one Scout camp where the medic said that a couple of kids each week got stung that way.
Most likely it is less common in houses.
Best Regards

Yeah, I was stung literarlly 5 minutes ago. And i was freaking asleep. I'm just glad I'm not going to die lmao.
And it did not feel like a bee sting, it felt like someone stabbed my hand.
