Thomas, the vision cage is more secure than an aquarium, so you should probably stick with that. Many snakes rub more when they can see out of an cage. Have you tried covering the glass and screen with something like newspaper or a towell to restrict his view out of the cage? You might give that a try and see if it helps. The nose rub should heal after a few sheds if you can keep him from adding to the damage.

Does your snake have a nice DARK smallish (=secure to the snake) box to hide in? My cobras like to stay in their boxes except to come out to eat. They sit with their head at the opening to look out for dinner. If you use something soft for their box, like cardboard, then their scales may grind it down instead of the other way around. You can also throw out a cardboard box when it gets dirty. Cobras poop a LOT (phew!) and who wants to worry about infecting them with their own droppings? So a smallish cardboard box with an opening a little larger than their diameter to feel secure in is good and you could change it as often as you need. Or a more natural-looking artificial box to match your cage, but then you need to wash it and sanitize it and get rid of the sanitizer before putting it back (trade out two different ones).

i am actually using a cardboard box but he would rather hide behind the box instead of in. i also have tried using natural looking hide boxes with no avail he always seems to want to hide behind the anything i put in for him. i also agree 100% on the vision cage but am not happy with the top inside edge, for he prefers that area way to much for liking. Thus another reason the thought of the 55gallon as an enclosure.

Your hide might be too big. Snakes want to feel the hide against their back; every commercial hide I've ever seen is about 3x taller than it should be. You can partly compensate by raising the floor level inside.
One thing that works well for fossorial snakes (yes, I know a kaouthia isn't) is a suitably sized plastic container with a hole in the side full of damp sphagnum. An upside-down margarine tub or tupperware container lets you drop a second one on top to serve serve as a trap box. And you can pop the lid if you need access.
You might try the same thing with shredded paper.
For the rub itself, I've found that silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene) cream is excellent.
