hey all, doing my first feeding for a white lipped bamboo pit viper soon and i was wondering which is best, live or dead. He is only a small specimen @ 25 cm in length and can take pinky mice (local pet store doesnt carry any other food sources).
I do have extra-long hemos and thick gloves for feeding dead. I was just looking for other suggestions, ideas, instructions, and other options.
(the person who is helping me get some experience in wants me to go out and get knowledge on my own coupled with his help.)
Thanks
You guys have been a great help thus far

if you're feeding dead, you can usually get away with simply dropping it in and going away.
if it won't take dead period, then you can use a live pink since they pose no threat to the snake. the only problem with live feeding is when you have a rodent large enough to cause harm, like an adult mouse or rat. they can gnaw a snake into, literally.
nothing wrong with feeding live baby mice/rats

In my experience I perfer live. Whenever Ive ever tried to feed frozen to any of my reptiles they have never accepted. The only animal I have owned that would accept frozen was my tokay gecko.
Congrat on the snake, good luck, and stay safe.

Oh and i forgot if you are goin to feed it live rodents, if you flick it in the head a couple of times and get it dazed there is much lower probability of any injury to the reptile that your feeding.
Thanks Eric

I have fed pre-killed or frozen/thawed rodents to three species of mamba, a dozen species/subs of cobra, a dozen species of rattlesnakes, three species of Bitis, and have fed dead prey to Micrurus. I am not talking about one individual of any ot these, either. Perhaps you haven't been really trying to get your snakes off live food.

Darrin,
I agree with Greg. I have never had much trouble with switching any snakes I have or have own to frozen/thawed prey. Plus, the benefits of feeding frozen/thawed outweighs feeding live. Such as, no parasites, no injury to the snake from the prey, only having to focus on one live animal versus two ( The snake and the prey), and I have found it helps to somewhat de-sensitize the snake from associating movement with food. Give your snakes the best husbandry you can and start by feeding frozen/thawed. Protect your investment. Take inconsideration that all zoos and top-notch private collections feed their reptiles exclusively frozen/thawed.
