i caught a banded water snake yesterday and brought it inside to take measurements, etc... i left it for a few minutes and came back to find it giving birth! i thought that it had just eaten and would have never guessed that it was gravid!are there any other reported births at this time in year? i know that it has been very warm lately but could this have affected the birth cycle or could this be an isolated event?

Chris, it is very unusual for the banded water snake to be giving birth to young in January. Usually, it should be June, July, or August, even in the far South.
Did the young survive? Do they appear to be normal, full term young?
Let us know more of what happens.
Best Regards JohnZ

they all appeared to be normal with the exception of one that was born dead, i did not have any extra tanks to keep them so i was forced to release all of them, the female was 3'1" and 8" in circumfrence prior to giving birth, i will try to upload photos as soon as i can get my camera to cooperate (i hate technology!)
