Hello everyone,
I`m sorry I haven`t posted in a long time but I`ve been realy busy at college. It`s harder than I thought it would be... :) I`ve chose my B.Sc. thesis topic and it will be the "Study upon the adder, Vipera berus (L.), populations from N-E Romania: geographical distribution and ecology.
Back to the topic of this message:
I`m planning to try to breed my puff adders this spring. At the moment they`re staying together in one cage but I`m going to separate them in the folowing days.
My questions are: How long should I keep them separated before I put them back together with the intention of breeding them ? Do I have to make any other changes in regards to cage temperature, humidity, feeding or anything else while they are separated or when I put them back together ?
Any other tips are welcomed.
Anticipated thanks for the help,
All the best,
Alex

Alex: College is generally harder than high school. Hang in.
Separating the animals is a good idea...and I would keep them separated except at breeding time. I would suggest allowing the cage temp to drop to about 10 or 12 degrees Celsius for a few weeks before the re-introduction. You might also mist the snakes when they are re-introduced.
Best of luck to you! ~~Greg~~

Agree with Greg here, unless breeding always keep the large bitis seperate. There was a case at the Poole Aquarium Dorset UK where one gaboon bit completely through anothers head. Oh and, the bitten gabby survived!

Hi guys,
Thanks for the imput. My puffies have gotten along great untill today. They have always minded their own rats and never gotten into any "arguments". Today I was trying to feed my female but the male bit the rat and the female bit the male`s head probably due to confusion. Just 2 drops of blood on the male`s head...nothing more thant that. I will separate them from now on. I just have to finish the other terrarium.
Thanks again,
Best regards,
Alex

Alex, good to see you back, and good that college is going well for you! Your thesis on the distribution and ecology of Vipera berus sounds like it will be a good project. After you complete it, please eMail me a copy to read.
As far as breeding the Puffs, I would do what the others have said, keep them seperate until actual breeding time. You might want to introduce the male right after the female has shed. These snakes tend to be quite prolific and temperature and humidity changes do not seem to matter much to them.
You also might want to start thinking about how you will feed or sell the 20 + young you will likely wind up with, LOL !
Best Regards

Hi John,
It`s great to hear from you.
I`ll soon publish a paper on seasonal activity of a population of Vipera berus from the Northern Carpathians and I`ll send it to you when it`s done. It will be the first ecological study of the adder in Romania and in the Carpathians so I`ll probably be quoted a lot in future papers which deal with similar subjects and that is, of course, great for my CV :)
Thanks for the tips on breeding the puffs and for all the help and suport.
Best regards,
Alex
