Sal, I have heard Stories very similar to that one, but in the ones I have been told. They said you can tell a Venomous Snake if their Tail is Blunt and if their Head is Triangular Shaped, but as we all know, any Snake in the Southeast could fit this description.
Legends and Myths really make good conversation, in Bars and Coffee Shops. I just love setting back and listening to Old Timers talk about these Old Myths. Shoot, some of them have probably been around for 100 Years or more. Makes for good entertainment, if you’re bored that is. In any case, I always try to Educate them on the Facts, after hearing their Stories. It always seems to give a Wide-Open Door to tell them the Facts instead of Myth, but as always, some Older Folks Swear by their Stories and would never believe you “got to try tho”.
Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I was told a story a while back about a farmer in WV sicle-barring his hay, which means he was on his tractor, anyways the farmer says he always carries a loaded 45 cause he has seen coyotes and big cats from time to time, but what he said next is amazing!!! He says that all of the sudden a snake stood up out of the grass right in front of his tractor, he got scared of it and blew its head off!! Then dissmounted the tractor to have a look and watched another one crawl away, so he reached for his cell phone and called the police and the DNR, and when both arrived the DNR officer identified the snake as beeing a male 11 1/2 foot Northern Copperhead !!!! And the farmer says that the one he watched crawl away was much longer and fatter than the dead one!!!! It is supposedly true and was on the front page of the news papers about 10 years back??? Can you imagine the leangth of the babies from a 13 foot Copperhead? they would come out full regular sized 3-4 foot!!!!

I was also told of a big 10 foot tall pile of brush out on a farm, and one winter an old man was deer hunting and decided to hide behind the pile, while there he watched a big Black rat snake come out of a tree branch which was about 4 foot above the pile, he says the snake went right through the pile to the ground, head touching ground and tail still in branch, which now makes this snake over 14 foot long!!!!!
