I have been thinking about this for some time and I realize that there are alot of lurkers here who may be able to help. As most of you know Agkistrodon is my prefered species to work with. This being said I have kept and bred all of the copper and cotton ssp along with some of the cantils. Various litters intergrades ssps localities etc. Well, recently I picked up some various contortrix ssp (what appears to be a full southern, full northern, Cntrl sw tx bband, okie bband, and a very "textbook" osage possibly one of the best I have ever kept. This osage in particular is quite unusual in the fact that its belly pattern (which tends to be pretty distinct for each ssp and intergrade) is almost SOLID black, with no pattern at all. It goes from nice clean ghost grey and rich chesnut bands to a break on the side and almost a solid black belly! I have never seen a black belly on a copper having seen thousands of the things(heck even some of the "lighter" melanistics have cleaner bellies). Does anyone else have any experience with coppers with black bellys, or is this something new? Anyone have any thoughts on this,
Jared

I have seen WC Northern’s, that were solid Gray Head to Tail, even the Belly was the same. Now, as for finding normal colored Specimens, with Dark Gray or Black Bellies, I can’t say I have ever seen this. On the other hand, I haven’t had no experience with Osage’s, they are the one Subspecies that I never Kept at the Zoo. So, I can’t much give you any real answers.
Jared: If it wouldn’t be too much trouble, why don’t you try and get Pictures of the Snake you speak of, and do it from a few deferent angles. It would be cool to see what it looks like.

Jared, like Wally said, an Osage with a solid black belly would be very unusual. If you can post photos of the snake, that would be great.
