Greg, I have wondered for a while if I should post this or not. In the previous thread concerning the Indiana Bill 482, you state that you want to help. This is a good thing, and you can help by writing a letter to the Legislature of Indiana against this bad legislation.
You have been posting here about a month now, and you have stated "i am young dont know a whole big lot about venomous snakes." Then you started complaining about the problems with this site and about you think that young folks here being scrutinized and that the old folks are rude.
Well, you got it part right, folks here are scrutinized. But not just young folks, folks of all ages. You can see the thread above about the person selling the Gaboon Viper who is 25 years old, and is handling it in a dangerous way. And the very laws in Indiana that you wanted to help with are being considered because a 40 something year old clown was keeping Cobras and Mambas in that state, and managed to get himself bit.
The people who are members of this site care very much about venomous reptiles and the continued ability to keep them in captivity. The members of this site represent some of the most experienced reptile keepers from all around the world.
You came to this site wanting to keep Gaboon Vipers. And guess what? It was site members who are experienced venomous reptile keepers who are 15 and 17 years old who told you that you should not do that. It was suggested that you might start venomous keeping with a Copperhead or Pygmy Rattlesnake. That was very good advise you recieved. And it was from young keepers who are near your own age!
You say that the older folks here are "rude" and that you "do not want to be scrutinized by someone i dont even know." It would seem that you come here like many others expecting for us to say "hell yeah, kid, go ahead and keep what ever venomous snake you want, yhea ha!" Well, you will not find that here.
What you will find is folks here who will consider your ability based on your profile, and based on what you post. And you will find that there are some here will support the ability of young folks to keep venomous snakes, provided that those young folks possess the skills, and maturity, and experience, and mentoring, and knowledge, and legality and parental permission that is required for this. You will find folks who will spend hours trying to help you learn the correct husbandry for keeping reptiles.
We hold you to high stanards here. The young people who are regulars here have earned the Respect from the older members by showing that they are knowledgable keepers, and that they can stand up to discussions here. Just because someone questions them about their keeping abilitys does not mean that they are on trial. It means they have the self confidence in their ability and are not afraid to express their ideas. It is a sign of the maturity needed by one who wishes to keep venomous snakes. You will find great examples here in young members like Chris, Bryan, Jeremy, Shayne,Phillip, Alex, Mike, Kyle, Nate, and Andy, and several others, all who are 12 to 19 years old.
Look Greg, you got off to a rough start here. You obviously have experience in keeping non-venomous snakes. You want to keep venomous snakes. You need to have some patience. And you need to find out if you can even get a venomous permit in Kansas. It will not help your case here if you post made up things about being 14 and keeping Bushmasters just to prove a point that folks here will be against that. What else did you expect? Besides almost giving Wally a coronary, you got the answers that you expected. That is not rudeness, and it is not putting you on trial. Most adults here would not be qualified or have the experience to keep a Bushmaster, and they would have recieved the same response.
I fully support young members participating here, as do most of the older members. And I have a huge amount of respect for their ideas and opinions here.
If you ask the young folks I have mentioned above, I think they will tell you that.
But I think that they will also tell you that they are held to the high standards of this site, and they are in full support of that.
Why dont you try to start over here Greg, take you time. Get to know the members here. It is a great site to help you learn about venomous reptile keeping, as that is what you say you would like to do. Dont be so fast to critisize answers you dont like. And dont make up storys about Bushmasters just to try to prove some kind of point.
Hope this helps, and I hope you will have the backbone and maturity to stand up here and take the time it takes to understand how to fit in at this site.
Best Regards JohnZ

They don't scrutinize based on age, but rather experience, if I slip up, they let me know and I thank them for that. It keeps me in line, as well as the other know-it-alls.

John: I think I will live this time “LOL”, but it did give me a good scare. If I had to do it again, I would probably drop dead.
Greg: I will second what John Stated, we are not by any means trying to scrutinize Younger Keepers. We just ask that they learn all they can, before they take on such an endeavor. But we welcome Youngsters to come on here and learn, shoot, if it wasn’t for up and coming Venomous Enthusiast, we wouldn’t have a Prayer of keeping things going.
Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I also agree with everything stated here.
I`ve been a member of this site since I was 17. I`m almost 20 now.
The only time I got criticised was when I acted too cocky and imature... This site and the people on it have helped me more than I could have possibly imagined, and I am greatful to all the people here for their help.
Belive me ! Even if it doesn`t apear this way at first, there is nothing the good folk on this site want to do except to help you.
Best regards,
Alex
