My Puff Adder seems to enjoy being sprayed with a spray bottle set on fine mist. She stops hissing and puffing and lies down flat flicking her tongue out. I've read that more Puff Adders are found in the wild foraging on rainy nights, so do they just enjoy a shower? This behaviour has really suprised me because she's usually very defensive. Have any other Puff Adder keepers noticed this? Regards, Mark.

Mark: I kept 3 Bitis arietans wile working at the Zoo and all seemed to have an affinity for being Misted, shoot, when I stated spraying them, they would lift their Heads up and drink the Water. And this is not the only time I have heard of this Behavior in Puffers. I’ve heard this happening at least 100 times from Keepers on here and other Sites, I’ve even heard from personal Friends that said their Puffs would drink from their hand “Odd Huu”?
I do know that there are other Species that will do this same thing and most are from Dry , and Arid Regions. One other one I can name is Echis carinatus (Saw-Scaled Vipers) and I have also heard of C. atrox, C. scutulatus, and C. cerastes. All of these Snakes are known to live in somewhat Dryer Areas, so the idea being that they will take any Water they can get “Even If Its From Their Worst Enemy” “LOL”.

I just got done looking at my last Post and I noticed a mistake. Instead of say they drank from their hand, I meant they drank the Water from the Misting “Not From Your Hand, Ooouch That Might Hurt Huu?”
