I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they can be sexed by the red and white stripe down there body or if the red tail has anything to do with it. I keep getting conflicting information from different sources and was wondring who to believe. I was told that males have the red and white stripes down the side.
Thanks
Joe G.

Hi Joe,
I'm looking forward to replys on this, I was told the same about c.albolabris the white lipped tree viper.
Is it true that male albolabris have a white stripe that is absent in females?

Well the red tails are present in both males and females but in pope's males have the red and white stripe and females have only the white stripe. In white lip vipers the white stripe is present only in males and none in females. However once a while you may get some unusual looking animals and relying only on the way they look is not 100% way to ID the animal. It is often impossible to identify the species you get. Just because someone sells it to you as white lip viper it doesn't necessarily mean it really is one and than it really doesn't help to see the stripes as you may have a female pope's thinking you have a male white lip. You may have to look at the nasal and first labial scales, which are fused in C. albolabris unlike p. popeiorum. The only sure way to tell the species is actually by their DNA.
However in adult specimens you can tell immediately if it's a male or female - the female is much bigger than a male. Pope's females grow up to about 30" and are much fatter than males, which usually are only about 24" and very thin. White lip viper females are even larger and can grow up to 40"
