The color-feeding in birds uses canthaxanthin (or am I thinking of the wrong thing?) to intensify red and yellow colors. Red canaries especially. I think its used in fish food too for the same reason.

Astaxanthin, not Canthaxanthin. Canthaxanthin, Wikipedia says, is something in illegal suntan pills. Where did I get that name?

I would dust your animals with Naturose, if possible. Also, spirulina algae is helpful for some colors. Not too sure if this is safe for snakes, but I don't think it would hurt. I guess you could sprikle some on the mouse?
