I'm looking for some information on Atheris hispidus. There is very little on the net except for they are hard to keep in captivity and rarely kept.
I need to know the husbandry needs for this species and where I might find a pair down the road.
Does anyone keep this species and breed them in captivity?
Thanks
Eric

I would contact Dan Scolaro. He advertises here under DSR and he has had pretty good success with them. Having worked with a number of Atheris species, I'll just add that it's important to start off with a well acclimated animal. Many imports are in terrible condition and require a lot of time and TLC to turn things around. Make sure they are very well hydrated when you first get them and just as importantly, make sure you keep stress levels to an absolute minimum.

I will look him up. I am hope to find one that is CB or atleast a long term captive.
I read pretty much the same info you just gave me about imports so I hope to stay away from them.
Any ideas on the going price for this species not really a concerned at this point just curious.
Thanks
Eric

Atheris hispidus is a very fragile species that feeds off of primarily invertbrates in the wild. Many captive specimens have been switched to small rodents but it is a very difficult task from what I have heard.
I also belive they require cooler temps them most African snakes, along the lines of Atheris ceratophora though I am certin. I will try to confirm and you can also have a look at the Atheris page which should include good, basic natural history of the animals.
As Rob said, be very warry of purchaseing fresh imports. This should be said with all snakes, especialy viperade and Crotalidae and ESPECIALY Atheris. I have seen some imported Atheris ceratophora (please forgive if I am butchering the latin name. It has been awhile since I typed it LOL)wipe out an entire captive colony before.
The CB ones on KS are your best bet at this time but if you do purchase these animals be sure to be ready for one hell of a headache as well as a nice dent in your walet.
Best of luck in your endevour. Im not sure as to your experince with Atheris so please forgive me if I am just preaching to the quire.
Best Regards,
Jeremy

I have little exsperience with Atheris species. I will wait a while before buying one. I would hate to get such a rare snake and have it die due to stupidity or lack of research. It is kinda hard not to buy one since there on KS and they are not normally availible.
I was told they need average temp of 70F and a basking spot of 80F and they have to be tease fed for now. The guy was really helpful when I emailed him asking about the husbandry requirments.
I will set up a tank and monitor it for a while see if I can even keep a viv at 70F. That might be a little hard to do in the middle of summer.
This is my all time favorite snake but till i gather the info I need it will have wait.
Keep the info coming I have alot to learn.

You're probably not going to find a CB or long term captive. The snakes for sale on ks.com are captive born and the FEW long term captives out there probably won't be sold anytime soon. Alot of work and luck go into keeping hispidus alive.

I have done a couple species of atheris..(the more hardy squams and chlorechis) but have known a few people that have done hispida and had luck at changing them over to rodents. If im not mistaken the ones on kingsnake are just captive born not bred, very few people have bred this species. So in my opinion imports at a fraction of the price are the same or less of a risk than the one's for sale. Long term captives are available every now and again and a few of the importers are having decent luck keeping them going. Either way i agree with the guys above, expensive and time consuming but amazing animals.
