What exactly is "suphan"? Is it a localty? A morph? All I know is what it looks like and that it is Naja kaouthia.
I will soon be receiving an adult female in trade. If I were to breed her with my albino male, what would be the outcome? Would they be normal kaouthia het albino, "suphan appearance" het albino, or maybe both het for albino?
I have seen albino suphans...very impressive. I would not mind heading that route pending how the genetics work. Otherwise, I will just aquire a male suphan.
Thanks,
Chris

Suphan Cobras (Naja kaouthia) come from a province in Thailand. These animals appear to have a strong cardiotoxin. We house about 75 animals that we are using in antiviral research. Columbus Zoo was the first to breed these(USA) in the 1980's. All of the founder stock from Columbus Zoo are now here at our Zoo. One is 32 years old. Thai antisera for Naja kaouthia works but in large amounts. One 7 ft animal produced 1.2 grams of dried venom.

Jim,
Thanks for your reply. Interesting information there. Could you answer me any of the genetics stuff too?
Thanks,
Chris

They will breed but we don't because we want to keep the animals as close to what they are in the wild as possible so as not to possibly effect the venom.
I don't know if that helps.

Thanks. I went back and read your first post and forgot to note how impressed I was with those numbers. 36 years old?!? 1.5 grams dry?!
Its a damn good thing I don't handle my hots.
Thanks,
Chris

Suphans are simply a locality phase of Naja Kaouthia. DNA studies prooved them to be indenticle to traditional kaouthia at a genetic level.
Wolfgang Wuster has alot of awesome information on them and other Asiatic naja on his website. Unless things have changed in my 2 year absence from the hobby he is the most definative source of information on Asiatic Naja in the world.
Hope this helps.

I appreciate all of the responses, and yes, WW is quite incredible.
I am still lost from a genetic standpoint though.
If a male albino monocled is bred to a female suphan, what will the visible outcome be? Obviously they will all be het for albino. However, will they look like suphans, normal monocleds, or both?
Thanks
