Hey guys, Im sure that some of you have already have gotten emails from people in cameroon. Ive read a few posts about it, and it happend to me 3 times. I posted looking for mangrove snakes, and rear fanged. I had 4 emails concerning them. I got my hopes up, when i asked were they were located and what the snakes were eating, how long have they been in captivity. The say thier not in the country but in cameroon, and they eat crabs. I asked one guy for pics because he had a fair price, he copy and pasted the mangrove snake Mark M Lucas has on his site for mangroves! I didnt beleive this, Everyone over there is a scammer. Just watch out guys.
Mike

You nailed it Mike.
Folks, if you are wanting to purchase animals, never send money to someone who contacts you by EMail.
Meet them in person, or go to a reptile show or reptile dealership. Almost all legitimate dealers have web sites these days, (and a few crook dealers also).
The only reason that the crooks in Camaroon, British Guanna, and the Ivory Coast continue their scams, is that some folks are stupid enough to send them money.
Be carefull out there !

Perhaps a pointer to a (another new? :))section on scammers/disreputable dealers would be a good addition? I don't know about the legalities, but I expect there are a few members who would be able to come up with something that wouldn't expose anyone to liability from a mistaken entry.

Hmmmm, I don't think it should go as far as to say that you shouldn't buy anything from someone if they do not have a website. I have thing sfor sale here and there, and have never scammed anyone.

Adam, I do not think I said "that folks should not buy from people without websites," what I said is that "most dealers these days do have websites."
Probably should have said most LARGE dealers, or FULL TIME DEALERS have web sites these days. But, as you said, that does not apply to all dealers.
It is not likely that a scammer in Camaroon will have a web site advertising reptiles for sale. It is just another way for someone to check out if a dealer is legitimate or not.
Of course, there will always be some who do not have websites, such as yourself. That does not mean that folks should not do business with you. You are well established and known, and are not a scammer. You have a good reputation from previous dealings here.
However, folks should still probably ask for references when dealing with an unknown dealer, wether they have a web presence or not.
People very readilly speak up as to wether they have had good or bad experiences with a reptile dealer. If someone is in doubt, then post a question, as it is likely others here will have had experience with most of the dealers who advertise here.
Best Regards JohnZ

I am one of the stupid people who sent money to someone in Cameroon about 3 years ago for a pair of savannah monitors :)
It`s best to let as many people in the venomous comunity know about these scammers.
Best regards,
Alex

Alex, sorry to hear that you got scammed by those folks !
They are very slick, so you have to be very carefull !
When I resently advertised here wanting African Pygmy Mice, I had 5 or 6 of the little boogers EMail me offering to sell me Pygmy Mice from Camaroon !
What is amazing is the missionary folks here in this country collect old computers, and take them over to those "impovrished" folks, and give them internet access ! Not too many Dell stores in Zimbabwe !
" The world was a better place when those folks ran around naked, worshiped fig trees, ate monkeys, and their only fear was Tarzan and Lions ! "
Missionarys have always screwing up things !
Just look at the poor Native Americans !
They seem to watch this web site a bunch !
Be carefull out there !
Best Regards JohnZ
