I would like to know the name of a certain type of snake or at least an idea of the type. It is a bright yellow with black markings that look almost like chinese symbols on its back. I saw it on Snakes on a Plane so Im not sure if there is an actual snake like this one. I was just curious because it was really beautiful.

A few of those snakes were loosely based on real ones, but most of them looked nothing like anything real. I don't remember the one you're talking about, but if you can locate a picture of it on the web, we can probably tell you if there is anything similar...

Most likely the snake you are talking about is the Mangrove Snake. Quite a few of them were used in making the movie. Take a look at this link:

One other possibility is the Mandarin Rat Snake, Elaphe mandarina. I did not see the flick. I refuse to encourage that sort of stuff.

Yeah, I need to watch that one just so that I can understand what my students are talking about. Understanding their questions makes lifting the veil of ignorance that much easier.

The thing is I cant find any pictures of it online. It probably is made up and based on a real snake. But in the move it was more yellow than black....I donno, maybe I'll try to find a movie clip with it.

Could be. They used over 450 animatronic snakes in making the movie, and who knows how the nit-whits painted them.

They finally had the half-off sale I've been waiting for, so I picked up a copy today. As long as I had it, I skimmed through and found the snake you're talking about.
I don't know of any real snake that looks quite like it. I suspect it was based on the yellow-bellied sea snake. Highly venomous, probably hard to keep alive and in Florida (and probably other coastal states) it's banned as a potentially invasive species.

The closest thing I know of that you might be able to get is a carpet python:

There are a few ball python morphs that bear some resemblance also, I think.
And Cro, I could be wrong but I don't think they used more than one or two animatronic snakes (mabe none). Most of them at least were just computer generated images. (CGI)..

Larry, I have not seen the movie yet, so I don`t know how many snakes were animatronic verses computer generated.
If you look at the Snakes on a Plane coverage on Wikipedia, which is often a unreliable site, you will find this statement: "About two-thirds of the snakes seen throughout the film were either animatronic or computer generated." Who knows what that means, LOL !
I meant to say that 450 live snakes were used in the movie in the above post, but the late night gremlins must have changed it some, LOL !
Best Regards JohnZ
