I need to know if anyone is familiar with the animal cruelty laws in Michigan.
A friend killed himself, and in his suicide note he requested I be contacted by the police to pick up his WDB. It has been in my possession for about a week. I recieved a call from the family and they would like the snake back in order to kill it and turn it into a trophy. I know this would be against a friend's wishes and do not want to turn the snake over to them. However, they have been through a lot and I do feel sorry for them and don't really want to string this out into a big battle, but I do need to know what rights I have. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

i know the family is in pain, but killing the snake is not going to help that. you are not going to get help under the animal protection angle, they could care less about reptiles, specially venomous snakes. possion is 9/10 of the law. i would respectfully tell them, it was his wishes for you to keep the snake and you intend to fulfill that. i wouldn't give it to them. i don't think they can make a legal case to take it.

Andrew,
You might respectfully ask them if there is any great hurry. Hopefully not too soon, but eventually, the snake will die. Promise the family that when it does you will return it to them. In the meantime let it remain a living memorial to your friend. You might even invite them to visit it on occassion.

Maybe a fellow herper could find a roadkill DOA thats unblemished or another deseased specimen ,and give them that. Was the WDB used in the suicide , or do they just want a barbaric trophy ?

No he just wants a barbaric trophy . Thats why he left such a detailed note that i take the snake so it wouldnt be destroyed for a trophy .I did offer to give them the snake when it dies of old age and most of the family was ok with that except the little brother. Unfortunately WDB is not a native species so I'd have to have one shipped (although I have thought about it).
Thank You Andrew
