Found this link on a Chattanooga, Tenn news 12 station site:
http://wdef.com/node/5473
I would guess that the reporter named Abena Williams and the pest control guy named Robert Templeton of Beaumont Pest Control, are not the sharpest crayons in the box.
The photo of the rat snake that they murdered sure does not look like any kind of "Cottonmouth" to me. And guess what, he says there are a family of Cottonmouths under the house, the longest being 9 feet long ! Wow, a world record in Chattanooga ! Not only that, he is going to need to come back with "A Special Kind Of Harness" to deal with the "Cottonmouth Snakes," which might have come out of the water of a near by pond to breed.
Chuck H., you live near there, how about telling your neighboring news folks how wrong they are?
I am sure not suggesting by posting this that folks here send any kind of corrections to poor old Abena or Robert, as we just might hurt their feelings and save the lives of a few harmless snakes.
Best Regards JohnZ

I think there's money to be made in providing a service where, for a reasonable fee, one can call and have a representative in any state go out and SLAP someone...

they don't CARE if they're wrong or right and the ignorant majority will take his word as gospel.
snake people are weird, "regular" people are great. "regular" people are also more trustworthy, we all know that.

Lets see, good old Abena joins News12 from Montana, where she spent a year working as a bureau reporter.
(Wonder how many Cottonmouths she saw in Montana?,LOL)
Abena is a native of Southern California (The Cottonmouth State, LOL) and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from California State University, Northridge. While attending CSUN, she worked in both radio and TV. She also won awards for Best Writer and Excellence in TV Journalism.
Abena looks forward to experiencing “southern hospitality” and some good cookin!(I hear fried Cottonmouth is not too bad, but taste a bit like Rat Snake !, LOL)
(Gosh, how much "southern hospitality" should we send her, ahd her station? LOL !)

So the answer to your question, Cro, is "No, all Tennessee natives are not that stupid"
The correct question is "Are all Californians this stupid?"
Yes ;)

I called Abena Williams this afternoon and confronted her about the silly, 1920s facts in her article. She said that what she wrote was provided to her by a termite inspector and that the inspector (Robert Tempelton) is in the process of contacting a “wildlife expert” to come in and remove the “eight foot cotton” that’s still their. I simply informed her that the article she wrote was complete fallacy and she should do more research before filling the news with junk. She didn’t know what to say when I informed her that the decapitated snake in the photo was a harmless rat snake and not a cottonmouth. She almost denied even writing the article then! She did offer to have Mr. Tempelton call me. Let’s see if he does. If I read the article correctly the snake was actually killed in North Georgia making it illegal.

Good for you in doing that Danel! (is that a typo in your profile, or just a different spelling of your name ?)
Someone needs to tell her just how dumb she is, and how what she is reporting on is illegal under GA Law.
Please let us know if you hear any more from her.

How EMBARASSING! Yeah it was a typo. I made my profile while I was talking to my wife and I kept referring to myself as Danel Boon (inside joke) Thanks for the heads up its fixed now. I make allot of silly typos when I am distracted. I plan on calling her again since I have not heard from the “wildlife expert” that she promised would call me.

If anyone would wish to call Abena Williams and ask for a Retraction / Correction to her story, she can be reached at (423) 785-1200.
She should have done more research before submitting her article, and should not have just listened to the termite inspector of the Beaumont Pest Control.
But you can not expect the average redneck termite inspector to know one snake from another. To the hill-billys in that area, all snakes are moccasins or copperheads or rattlers, LOL !
If nothing else, Abena should have researched the dead snake that was labeled a cottonmouth, and found out if that was actually what it was. But I would be willing to bet that in California, they do not know what research is, reporting is probably all based on just how much emotion they can dredge up.
It is not likely that the fellow from the pest control business will ever be charged for violating the GA
Game and Fish Law, unless there is a Game Warden in that area who believes in Enforcing the Laws.
By now, the home owners have probably murdered the rest of the rat snakes, and broken more laws in doing so.
Or perhaps the snake "expert" has shown up with his "special harness" that he needs to capture the snakes, and has re-located them ?
Anyway, it is something to think about.....
Best Regards JohnZ
