I'm preparing to introduce my adult male and female rinkhals and am looking for anyone who might be familiar with what I could expect. I've already posted about this on a South African herp forum and received some informative responses, but breeding attempts with this species in the US are, apparently, few and far between. That makes sense, considering how few people keep them. I'd just like to get a bit of first hand information if anyone has any to spare.
I've read (a few times) Susan Hunter's old account/article here on vr.org of her attempts to breed this species, but it's the only non-African source of information I've found. She mentions that her male killed her female during the courtship process because apparently he envenomated her quite a bit when he bit the back of her neck to pin her down. Obviously, I want to avoid this scenario if I can.
My snakes are currently undergoing a bit of a brumation period, but I'm unsure whether to introduce them now or wait until afterward. Also, I'm unsure whether to leave him with her for a day, for a few days, or nonstop until I think he's done his job.
Finally, optimal gestation temps and gestation period information would be greatly appreciated...as would how easily (or not so easily) I could expect to get the babies started feeding once they're born.
As always, any information at all would be greatly appreciated. If things go well, or even if they don't, I'd probably be willing to write up my experiences in an article if you guys here would like one to add to the articles section.
