no, you can keep any sp that is native to AL. AL is one of the few states that breaks them down to the sub-sp level. you are good with southern copperheads, northern copperheads, western, eastern, and FL cottons, timber rattlesnakes, canebrake rattlesnakes, western pygs, dusky pygs, eastern diamondbacks, and eastern corals. i have most of these for sale right now, check with me if interested. -=) ---Chuck

Well I thought that I could keep native venomous snakes (believe me, I want to), but those who work with snakes say it is completely illegal to own them without a permit. (So they say) However, I never want to take my chances with the law.
P.S. www.deadlybeautiful.com has many kinds of photos of venomous snakes with out of the ordinary designs. The manager of the site may or may not have photos of south-eastern pit vipers, but it is well worth a try. Also, if you copy a photo from the manager, you may have to pay money for it.

Whoever is telling you that keeping venomous snakes in Ca is illegal has no idea what they are talking about. On the state level, an indivdual can keep up to 2 specimens of the native crotalids. Front fanged, exotic venomous snakes require a permit from Ca Fish & Game. However, you CAN keep native venomous with a bag limit of 2 per species.
Now, keep in mind that city and county ordinances may very well prohibit the keeping of these animals. It's best to check the county/city ordinances in your place of residence before acquiring any venomous snakes.

you won't get any help through any agency, they do NOT issue exotic permits to anyone and the ONLY person that can issue these permits is the fish and game even though a few sheriffs have issues a few permits over the years.
also, they say that technically it has to be an indigenous ANIMAL of an indigenous species, meaning that out of state animals of legal species are actually illegal.
it's a very touchy situation in the state now so unless you're a nut for venomous snakes, it would be best to just not keep any right now.
also, there are a lot of city and county ordinances that forbid venomous snakekeeping, madison county is one.
you will get tons of misinfo and even if an official says this is legal or that is illegal, the ONLY thing that matters is what is the law on the books.
they're having a field day with venomous snake keepers in alabama right now. have been all year.
