I am relativly new to 'hots'. I have worked a little with both Monocled Cobras and Banded Water Cobras under my mentors supervision.
I am thinking of next year possible getting a cobra of some kind. I do know that I dont want a spitter and I dont want a king because of the sheer size.
Any suggestions of a first cobra...and a first elapid. I would like to do as much research on my choices before I jump in. I primarily like Vipers but there is something about the cobras that I like.
Thanks for your help.

hey man, i am going to tell you already, they are going to be all over you about filling out your profile before they give you any info. my first was about a 6 foot black pack. i ordered him from glade's herp when i was about 18 and by all rights it should have killed me. =-) so, i am saying, i dont know for sure where to start, but do not start there.

I agree with Chuck. Please fill out your profile, so we can get a feel for who we are talking to. People here are often willing to help, but the first step is filling out your profile.

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction to get started. I have been lurking around the site for a few months reading articles and such, but I have decieded that I need to sign up to get the best of what this site has to offer. I had to look to find the profile section....but I have updated my profile.
Like I stated.... I have just started working with hots (been working under a mentor for about 6mos). I am not looking to get anything this year.... and prob not until middle of the next....maybe a little later... but I would like to hear the opinions of people that are far more superior than I when it comes to hots.
A couple of months ago I had the oportunity to get an albino Crotalus atrox. They are a beautiful animal and of all my mentors snakes I enjoy working with his atrox the most. It may have something to do with their attitude... I dont know... but I enjoy that animal the most. I asked him if he thought I was ready for an atrox of my own. He advised me that I needed to wait until at least until sometime in '08. I am gonna take his advise because he is there to keep me safe.... and I still dont have my atrox.
Thanks for your help.

Kevin, listen to your mentor. When you are ready to keep a cobra, I would suggest a Coral or Shield Nosed Cobra, of the Aspidelaps group. They are fun to keep, and have great attitudes.
Best Regards JohnZ

lanceheads.... my mentors name is Bobby... He is a grad student and has been keeping hot for approx 10 years. He has taught me alot to keep me safe. One drawback I have... is sometimes it is hard to get an opportunity to work with him because of our schedules.
I have had a great opportunity to work with some amazing animals..... but due to schedule conflicts if someone is in my area and would like to mentor another person... I would love the opportunity to learn all that you can from you.
