Hi!
I just found this site today (Sept 18), and I think it is so cool! I am a very amateur herper, and I read everything I can find about herps. I've been reading and researching about hots because I want to get some eventually (in about 15 years, and only after an apprenticeship). I have a few questions though:
1) Where do you guys/gals get your anti-venom at?
2) How much does it cost?
3) (Most important)Where can I find great books on general venomous snakes. I would like one that covered how all the basics are different when it comes to hots. Especially trap boxes and the tools of the trade.
I want to know about these books for reasearch purposes only. I'm definately not going to start keeping hots without being tought how.
Thank you for answering, and congrats on the excellent site! Keep those great articles coming!

You need USDA and FDA permits for av. This can take up to a year to get, you need to be professional and articulate. Call MD, and start from there. AV is cheap, my last shipment with shipping, was only 500 bills. Also, check you're ins. company and make sure ins. will cover a bite. Next, work with a doc. and make sure he/she knows what to do, my doc. is a women, much more receptive. It will not do a dam bit of good if their not well versed in all aspects of treatment and therapy(ana. shock, etc.) Start slow and work you're way up, it's a dangerous gig. I applaud you're thinking and common sense, not seen by many!!!! As for venom basics, Allen Hunter's site is great and will teach you alot. Tim

Most of us know where the nearest AV is and we all know exactaly what to do if bitten. We discuss it with each other quite a bit.
The trick, of course is not to be bitten. Which means that you never get complacent, you keep the area around the cages clean and picked up, and you NEVER get in a hurry.
