When it comes to strike height, most snakes can strike 1/3-1/2 thier body lenght. So a five foot timber ( which is common in Arkansas) would have a two foot strike. But, remember, this is only a general rule. There will be exceptions. Most snakes want to keep their strikes as short as possible. I own a pair of rubber wadders that I use. I have never had a snake bite through or over them. The biggest snake I have encountered was a six foot eastern diamond back rattler, when I was stationed in Florida. If you prepare for the worst though....the better off you will be.
Hope my input helps.

There are various items of clothing that are indeed snake proof. Always wear snake boots, that's just a rule of thumb. Depending on where you are will determine the types of snakes and thus strike-height, but you'll likely want snake proof pants as well just to be safe. Check out the gear at http://snakeprotection.com/ - they have the best brands for each item you'll need, tried and true.
