my mother in law claims that its illegal to own venomous snakes in south carolina if you have kids under 18 years old in the houseold. so she calls dss and now my kids are in "safe care" while they "look into it". i think she is just trying to cause trouble because she doesnt like them. i know they arent illegal in the law books and you dont have to have a permit and i looked up social services regulations in south carolina and the only thing it says is that reptiles and rodents must be inaccesible to children. in otherwords a, deadbolt on the snakes room door, which i have 2 of them and are keyed on both sides with 1 to high for them to even reach it in the first place and the keys stay on my car keys which are always with me. also every tank with a snake in it has 2-500 lb ratchet straps around it holding the lid on. ive had it this way for ten years and not once has one came close to getting out i was wondering if anyone else on here has had any trouble with this before or knows more about it.
thanks

"i think she is just trying to cause trouble because she doesnt like them"
She dosent like the kids ? Or she dosent like snakes ?
Either way, she sounds like a piece of work.
Once the children services get mixed up in something, you might just have to get yourself an attorney to help protect your rights.
Good Luck

Rob, no matter what the laws say, social services can make your life a nightmare if they want to, especially about something as feared and misunderstood as captive venomous snakes.Priority, obviously is keeping your kids.Like any government agency, their "investigation" will be long and drawn out, allot of red tape,no 2 agents will be able to give you the same answer to any one question, and none of them will know a damn thing about snakes much less venomous husbandry. I would suggest a good lawyer.Maybe find a friend or someone to keep your snakes while this plays out? Good luck, Marty

in regards to john she doesnt like the snakes. of course because she doesnt understand them or my love for them.
i know kids are the priority thats obvious and for now i have the snakes at a buddies house until this whole thing blows over which i think it will because there is no real case against me so i dont think i need a lawyer. what im thinking about doin is puttin one the agents in a cage with the ratchet straps and see if they can get out. maybe it will make them think if they cant get out, the snakes cant get out!!! lol!!!
anyways thanks guys. ill repost with what happens.

I hope your right Rob and this blows over, however, I agree with Marty, Social Services can ruin your life with their witch hunts. Do not hesitate to seek legal advise if this thing is not quickly resolved.

I used to take in foster kids so had some experience with 'caseworkers' and how they can be. Just like any government entity, they can lie, manipulate and bring personal issues to the situation all the while being seen as an 'expert'. If the m.i.l. has a sympathetic ear to playing the concerned grandmother and a lack of any animal experience- you better be ready. I never had an issue with any animals but watched enough of how they can operate and it's not always truthfully or in the best interest of the people (including children) involved. Personal issues affected most of them I ever dealt with and unbiased, follow the law, wasn't always foremost. I'd make sure they know you've done your research on the laws and KNOW them. A consultation with an attorney is a very good idea if they balk at anything you tell them. Bullying tactics aren't above them.
Much luck.

Ive done my research on the laws here in south carolina. there is nothing anywhere in law books, codes or regulations. the only thing is what i said about dss. Reptiles and rodents must be inaccesible to children. that was the only thing i could find and ive still been looking. and i told that to the "officer" i talked today and also i said you have no case. then she came up with some federal regulation crap about it being a federal offense to own "poisonous snakes". Didnt you see the news and the map??
i just started laughing about that, couldnt help myself. probably a bad thing i did that, but if your going to bs someone then bs someone that cant say your wrong...lol!
thats the crap ive dealt with so far but thanks for the input.
