I have a couple of questions about the M1 snake tong. My only consern about snake tong is the possibility of the snake getting hurt, but I have heard that people use the M1 snake tong on medium sized vipers and have had great success. I catch snakes in an area that is rocky and has alota sage brush so I generally have to grab the snakes fast before they disappear into a bush or under a rock. Would you recomend these tongs for field work? Is there any chance that a quick grab could harm the snake?

Yes! What a great tool. The design has always been great, but when Midwest manufactured them, the quality finally got to where it needed to be. In my opinion, these are one of the best tongs for vipers/pitvipers 4 feet and under. And the quality will last a lifetime if you don't use them as a pry bar.
I also like to periodically add a drop of oil to areas that move. Gentle Giants and M1's are the only tongs that I use.

Ditto that. The gentle giants, in my opinion, are the best tongs for captive husbandry situations (and great for field work as well) - they work great for smaller sized hots and also work equally well for removing feces, shed, water bowls, any application where you need a "longer arm" w/out mucking with the animal to keep stress down. Heck, we even use them in our croc monitor exhibit, picking up heloderms to move out of the way during servicing, etc. We've got a size for every occasion. I do admit that I use my midwest snake hooks 95% of the time (particularly for elapids and larger crotalines, lachesis, etc.) and feel more comfortable with the hooks but when I have that extra squirmy rattler that I need to move, I don't hesitate to grab my gentle giants.

I would agree that the gentle giant is great for indoor work and some field work. The wide jaw is the only problem because it cant fit into tight spaces, which is essential for where i go field herping. that is is why i like the m1.

The M1 is a much better choice for the field work around rocks you are doing than the gentle giants. They are very much like the old style Pilstrom Tongs, which are also an excellent choice.
One thing you can do is take some of that tubular sponge rubber that is used to keep pipes from freezing in winter, and slide a piece of that over each jaw. Then use some electrician's tape to secure it. It has enough cushioning to help protect the snake, and enough holding ability to hold the snake in place.
Another thing you might want to look into are the MIGHTY MIDGET REPTILE TONGS that are sold by Randal Berry, who is a member of this site. While not as strong as M1's or Pilstroms, they would be great for reaching back into crevices for smaller snakes like Crotalus lepidus. Check them out at:

Hope this helps.

I have a question on the trigger of the M1. I have a pilstrom style snake tong made by a pakistanian company ( I know, what was I thinking!)called prestiege pakistan or somthing like that and every time I go to make a quick grab the trigger moves to the left or right and catches on the other part of the handle, which makes the jaws close only part way allowing the snake to escape. Does anything like that happen with the M1 or is the trigger tight and smooth?
