I was wondering if anybody could tell me if the midwest collapsible hook has any problems or anything that should be noted. I have a collapsible snake hook that I bought at a local reptile show and it works okay, but I have run into certain problems with the hook. about seven months after I bought the hook ( I had only used it once or twice) the locking rings suddenly stuck and would not unlock. After removing the locking rings ( with considerable effort) I found that the threads had been ground away. The metal seems to be of cheap aluminum and bends quit easily. it holds up okay while hooking a medium sized snake, I wouldnt trust it with a venomous species. Does the Midwest collapsible hook have any of these problems?

Taylor, the aluminum that Midwest uses in its hooks is a higher grade, and stronger, than what is used in cheap imported hooks.
Even high quality aluminum is still much softer than steel though, and things like threads can get boogered up if they are over-tightened.
The midwest collapsible hook is great for keeping in a car, just incase you run accross a venomous snake crossing a road. It would also be usefull to take on a trip where you were flying by plane somewhere.
I would not consider it to be a full time field hook though. Anything that is made to telescope will never be as strong as a solid shafted hook.
Most herpers own many snake hooks, and use them for different purposes.
I would suggest a stout beast like a Furmont stump ripper or Midwest`s copy, for field work, and an conventinal hook or two for home / cage use, a mini hook for neonates, and a collapsible hook to kick around under the car / boat / atv seat.
If money is an issue, the folks at "Cheap Snake Hooks" make some excellent field hooks. They are also SHHS site members and good folks to deal with.
Hope this helps. Best Regards JohnZ

I actually own the hook and it goes with me in my suit case when I travel. It's strong but not indestructable, however, Midwest support is not to be beat. I contacted Dana and he said send it in and he would have a look at it. It was more than a year old but sent it in anyway to see if the problems could be fixed. I was very surprised to find a brand new hook in the returned box a few weeks later, no charge.
Not only does Midwest design first-class tools for the hobby but their support is unsurpassed.

My Midwest Collapsible Hook has travelled the world with me since it collapses small enough to fit under the pillow of your average United States Navy submarine bunk.
When I bought it from Dana, he warned me that it would not survive prying or pinning but would be good for lifting most snakes.
I took that advice to heart and my hook has survived use in Australia, Singapore, Guam, Okinawa, California, Arizona, Georgia, Texas and Florida. It has not bent or ever failed me. The worst thing that has ever happened with my collapsible hook was that I lost the rubber cap that fits over the end of the haft.
Dana told me I could return it to him and he would refurbish it but what the heck, it still works fine and is currently packed in my carry-on bag for my upcoming trip to California.
Easily the best traveling hook I have ever had and when it no longer works - I will get another one from Midwest.
Just my personal opinion.

I too have a Midwest collapsable. I really only use it at home, but have taken it with me on trips. I'm actually planning on getting another one as I don't like to use field hooks on my captive animals. Anyway, I highly recommend it. It's a great hook, that when used within it's limitations, is practically indestructable.
