Sorry for the unprofessional title. Here's a thought: keep the VR public forum open for anyone to spew their crap in a free environment - that's fine and dandy and provides cheap entertainment to lurkers and others. But, perhaps there could be a special site w/in this site that is only open to folks approved by the VR board of directors where stimulating conversations can take place w/out having to worry about 5 year olds chiming in. It could be similar to the listserves like AZA that I belong to and we have some nice conversations among fellow professionals (and serious hobbyists). There could be a special access code or password for "members only" or something along those lines. While I think its important that professionals on this site help the newbies and provide some of their experience, I also think its important for folks who just want to have good, stimulating conversastions about the hobby/profession to take place w/out having to worry about ingnoramouses looking on. I'm actually serious about this request because right now, I honestly don't have a reason to poke here too often. Yes, this sounds pompous - I guess I'm being pompous.

I think that's a great idea Rob. I'm not sure what the complexities would be for the site masters to implement such a system, but I'm sure it's possible. Chris, Karl, Al, John?

For fear of also sounding pompous...I too have come here less and less often... I would love to see what Carmichael is suggesting...?

This is a good point.
We have to remember that the main site is kind of open to the whole herp world, and that is who will visit.
Because of that, the main site will never be the specific serious herping site that folks wish for.
From time to time, we will have to deal with situations here that cause a disruption.
However, the overall main site does work well. We do have the opportunity to answer questions for folks, and have the photo albums and libraries. We do reach a lot of folks world wide. The educational value of that is worth the effort.
Best Regards JohnZ

true rob a password system for the "serious hobbiest's and professionals" would be nice but it would be difficult for the admin department to keep up with.besides we for years have weeded out the fools on our own pretty well. as with anything else in life there will be ups and downs.sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.

This has certainly gotten distasteful in here hasn't it? Every great once in a while I will slither through to see what is going on, yet not a lot changes sadly.
Hey Rob- on a good note...my mangrove eggs finally hatched. @ 100 day incubation. The eggs that I had mentioned were splitting finally did so and I lost those two, the remaining are quite attractive little finger snappers!
All is well in Victoria, lots of herps! I counted 8 of 5 different species while standing outside of my office door the other day.

Sorry to hear that Doug, you should slither through more often.
