Robert, it is very difficult to determine what the longest / largest rattle is.
This is because segments of rattles can easily be snapped together, so that a dishonest person can plug together the segments of several rattles, and create an un-naturally long rattle or 20, 30, or 40 setments.
I have caught one Timber Rattlesnake (Lowland Form) in the wild that had 21 buttons. I have had several rattlesnakes in captivity that developed from 19 to 24 buttons before they broke some of them off.
Because rattles are easily damaged, most snakes in the wild will only have 7 to 14 buttons before the string gets broken.
Hope this helps. Please fill in the rest of your Profile here before you ask additional questions.
Best Regards John Z
