Venomous Coral Snake on the Loose in Idaho Falls
Posted: July 2, 2008 02:30 PM PDT
Idaho Falls Animal Services was notified Wednesday that a venomous coral snake escaped from its enclosure in the basement of a home in the 600 block of Wabash Avenue in Idaho Falls approximately 3 weeks ago. The owner of the snake had attempted to locate the snake without success.
The area has been searched and the snake has not been located. The snake is approximately 18 inches in length.
Coral snakes are venomous. They are very reclusive and non-aggressive. Coral snakes are not known to attack without provocation. They are drawn to secluded, darkened areas, such as wood piles, under rocks and thick vegetation. They may go without food for several months, but they do need an available source of water.
If bitten, the victim should seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms may take up to 12 hours to present themselves, but immediate medical attention is essential. There is an anti-venom, however it is not readily available in our area, and would have to be flown in.
Bonneville County and Idaho Falls Police dispatchers are aware of the situation, and can give emergency first aid procedures to a bite victim.
Please contact Irene Brown, Idaho Falls Animal Services Manager, at 390-8730 for more information if needed.
The public is to be careful and to call the police with any sightings of the snake.
Owning venomous reptiles within the City of Idaho Falls is a misdemeanor criminal offense. An investigation is ongoing in this case.

Put a few more nails on the coffin folks. It's hard to justify protecting individual's rights when our very "own" deliberately break the law and then make it even worse by letting a venomous snake escape. Not good.

Many, MANY years ago, the west was a place you could go to escape the straitjacket of 'correct' thinking. It was an open area where people could escape the narrow minded strictures of dull, leaden conformative people. The 'West' is dead. I find it fascinating that the land of the frontier man, the cowboy and the renegade now has some of the most repressive laws in the country.
Colorado as an example. "Yes we have a permit system (for venomous). No, we don't issue any permits." (Paraphrased for clarity.)

At least if this story is true, it was already illegal for the person to keep venomous snakes there so he was already breaking the law. The backlash would probably be a little worse if it was completely legal (in other words, hadn't yet been addressed) and people had to start saying to themselves "What?! That's legal here?! Gotta change that!"

When coral snakes are outlawed, only outlaws will have coral snakes. I honestly don't know what the big deal is. I live in the land of the wild corals and never worry about them.

Coral snake goes missing in Idaho Falls
Associated Press - July 3, 2008 11:54 AM ET
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) - A potentially deadly snake that can paralyze human breathing muscles may be on the loose in Idaho Falls.
Animal control searching for the red, yellow and black striped coral snake are warning residents to call police if they see it.
Since coral snakes are reclusive and must chew on their victims in order to fully inject their venom, no deaths have been reported from bites in the United States since 1967.
Apparently, the family that owns the 18-inch snake took their son to the hospital after learning it escaped, on fear that he'd been bitten.
He hadn't, but the news that a possibly dangerous reptile was on the loose sent animal control officers scurrying around the neighborhood to find it, only to no avail.
Pet shop owners say it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Poisonous Coral Snake on the Loose in Idaho Falls
Posted: July 2, 2008 08:27 PM PDT
The Idaho Falls Police Department is cautioning some people in Idaho Falls, after a man reported that his poisonous pet snake escaped from its enclosure, and has still not been found.
Animal control says the people found the snake in the wild in Texas, and should not have brought it home as a pet. Now that they have lost it, they have temporarily moved out of their home, afraid to sleep there at night.
This young boy at the Tautphaus Park Zoo is mesmerized by the zoo's Boa Constrictor snake. But when it comes to snakes, that's not always the reaction.
Mikayla Marley: "Oh my gosh they freak me out, I can't stand them!"
Brandon Holly: "They're creepy, I don't like them at all."
Especially after you hear a poisonous snake could be on the loose.
Marley: "I didn't think there were any poisonous snakes in our neighborhood, that kind of worries me."
They are just some of the many people who have learned their neighbor on Wabash Avenue can not find his colorful but venomous Coral Snake.
Michelle Porter, Wabash neighbor: "It's very shocking to know someone would have a poisonous snake, they put a ton of people in danger here."
The snake escape coincidentally happened right next door to a veterinarian.
Dr. Les Stone: "I believe they're one of the most dangerous snakes in the world as far as how toxic their venom is."
If it has indeed escaped it's enclosure in the basement, looking for food and water, it could be anywhere, in cool, shady spots, hiding from the sun in drainage pipes or bushes. It's only active at night since it's nocturnal. It's what Idaho Falls Animal Control describes as looking for a needle in a haystack, now that the snake's owner has reported the escape, three weeks after it happened.
Irene Brown, Idaho Falls Animal Control: "He suggested we go downstairs in the middle of the night on our hands and knees with a flashlight, well I'm not gonna do that!"
It is a misdemeanor to own a poisonous snake so the owners could be cited about $130. Some people say the fine and/or punishment should be greater.
Animal control says if anyone is bitten, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center can get the anti-venom to Idaho Falls overnight. If the snake is outside, and is not found, it will die during our brutally cold winter.

Once again, so many ills are caused by the bad things that never happen. Chances are, this secretive snake will never be found, and even if it is, will probably not bite anyone unless it is intentionally picked up. This incident will no doubt, however, lead to stricter laws and an even dimmer view of the snake-loving community. It will no doubt perish in the Colorado winter if it's outside, but that's still 2-3 months away. I'm a little concerned about why they thought their son had been bitten. Did he let it out? How old is he? My son is never allowed to enter the serpentarium unaccompanied, and he's very well-trained as to which snakes are which, etc.

The only real problem is that a Coral Snake is attractive, and the snake could stay active all summer.
Some kid in Idaho Falls is not going to know not to pick up the pretty snake, while a kid in Texas or Florida, in the range of Coral Snakes, just might have been trained to avoid a red, black, and yellow snake.
