Those of you who did not attend the Columbia Reptile Show this weekend missed a very good show.
As usual, Cathy, Danny, and the rest of the Repticon Team did a great job bringing the show together, and we also saw stepped up security, which also helped improve the quality of the show. Thanks Again for all the work that you do to bring great shows !
There was a excellent turnout from the public, and several new vendors there, and many excellent reptiles and amphibians and supplies.
The prices on animals were the lowest they have been in years, with many bargains to be found. Not so good for the vendors, however, it was a great opportunity for the public.
The Banquet went very well, with very good BBQ.
Chris Harper gave an excellent presentation and slide show on Sri Lanka venomous reptiles, and the efforts that are being made to bring antivenom to that country. That ongoing project should help save the lives of thousands of snake bite victims every year.
Following that, Chris spent time discussing venomous snake bite first aid for our native venomous snakes.
Thanks Again, Chris !
It was great to see old friends there, and was great to make new friends.
Best Regards John Z

I was there saturday and agree the turn out was awesome. I bought more hots than I planned on buying. It was a buyers market for the most part and I took advantage of it.

LOL... Dont remind me John!
The 1'st was my birthday, and this would have been my first Comlumbia show. Instead, I was laid up in bed, in pain, with my mouth swollen to twice its normal size.. lol..
I hope everyone had a good time!
Take Care.

I had a great time at the show this weekend. Cathy please put me down to help out again at the next show. I met a lot of good people and got to put more faces with names as well as new names entirely. Happy to say only had contact with one individual that I question the IQ of. Hopefully at the next show I will have more money to take home "goodies".
Chris, thanks for a informative and educational presentation. I would have stayed and listened and picked your brain all evening. I would very much like to see your 4 hour presentation. Maybe we could all find the time and extra funds to make that happen in the future before you take off for foreign lands again.
John and Dr. Bob, great seeing you gentlemen again. If you get together a trip flipping tin in the spring, please keep me in mind for an invite
Paul I enjoyed meeting you and finally getting a chance to talk to you.
As far as the deli cups......They definitely have pros and cons and do not think the general public should have such direct contact with them. I was sorry to hear of the accident that occurred with them on Sunday. I am certainly glad it was not severe. I handled quite a few deli cups this weekend and never really got worried accept for one larger Monocle Cobra in one. He was ready GO. I warned the buyer to be ready for it to come out HOT when he got home.
Had a great time. Hope to see you all again soon. Take care and be safe.

Charles, I also hope we can do some tin flipping this Spring. That time of year, the field herping is always a lot of fun.
As far as the deli cups, it it interesting to watch folks handle them. Some folks pick them up without any consideration on where they put their hands, or which way the snake in the cup is facing.
I try to never come into contact with the sides of the deli cup, only the top and bottom of it, and I try to pay attention to the way the snake is facing, and try to not grab the cup directly inline with where he might strike.
Unfortunatly, it is very easy to forget to do this, and just casually pick up a deli cup. The best solution for this problem, would be to have the cups inside of a rack or cage of some sort, or under a screen net, so that the public could not just reach down and pick one up.
Best Regards John Z

I'd like to ditto what Cro said about the excellent job the Repticon team did, the BBQ, and Chris's great presentation.(I'd like to see the 4 hr one you mentioned)I was there Sat. and Sun. and as usual, I came home with twice the animals that I'd planned on, but I did sell EVERYTHING that I brought to the show, so that was good.If you couldn't make it, try for the next one in March, it's a good show.Take care, Marty

This show was definitely alot better than the last one. I didn't see animals that were near death like the show last time. One thing that did bother me were the people that obviously don't think that there is any danger putting their fingers all over the lids and sides of deli cups with venomous snakes in them. More particularly any containers that had any species of Bitis in them! Other than that, I thought it was a definite improvement. It was also very special to me because I picked up a pair of Banded Water cobras, a species which I've wanted for many many years. -Jamie

I saw the bite happen as the table it occurred at was across the aisle from mine. The way the vendor had the venomous displayed it was just a matter of time. I saw several very young children picking up deli cups without concern from the vendor. I was also dismayed that the persons putting on the show did not show any interest in dealing with the vendor - either making them leave or ensuring that the venomous were properly contained. The health of animals displayed throughout the venue left a lot to be desired. How can any private breeder compete with a bunch of wild caught garbage that was on death's door for $5 to $20? It's sad that venomous are so readily available to those that probably do not intend to set them up or care for them properly.

First let me say that Danny and I appreciate your support and thank you for any advice. As for Taz( the vendor in question) I personally spoke with him and he had already gotten his crew on applying more tape. Even though there was nothing wrong with them to start with. Taz has come along way since the begining. He does not display his animals any different than the normal Joe. You have a excelent display case, however We do not think we could enforce that one on every vendor. We are working on getting our show as safe as possible and will be enforcing some new things at the next show.
I think the one that should be blamed for getting bit would be the VENDOR holding the deli with his fingers over the holes. The one that did recieve the dry bite.
We try to catch animals that look back but with thousands of animals in the show, we may have missed a few. If you saw something that needed our attention, why not tell us when you saw before the show ended. We can not fix something if we dont see it.
