I am thinking about loading up my camera and heading up to Claxton next weekend to get some pics of how the Rattlesnake Roundups are handled here in Georgia. Is anyone else planning on going? I am not going in support of the roundup but I won't be going as an all-out protester either. Kind of a first time observer, taking notes to support a letter to the Claxton Chamber of Commerce kind of trip. You know, looking for the scent of gasoline on the collector's breath sort of thing. Buzztail,l its kinda depressing to see two or three hundred adamanteus and a few horridus in several 4x8 wire cages. The Claxton roundup is handeled rather humainly and they do give lectures on snakes being a positive part of the eco system. I used to go to the Claxton roundup every year and get snakes, but I have stopped going because that 5 dollar entrance fee helps support the roundups. I have also hunted allot of easterns in Evans co, GA. and have found several holes that had strong gas oders around them with decaying gopher tortises close by. I hope you can get some good pic's of the Georgia roundup. Last year they told all the people who ask what they do with the snakes, that they milk them and release them, not telling them the truth about the skin dealer who buys all the snakes for leather goods. Although I don't think they allow any one to sell snake parts at the roundup any more. One step at a time I do think roundups are slowwly changing in a positive mannner.
have a good trip.

Gopher tortoise burrows with the odor of gasoline and decaying tortoises nearby? Next time, take some photos! That would be GREAT documentation. That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

I HAVE A GREAT IDEA OF HOW TO IDENTIFY THOSE COLLECTORS WHO HAVE BEEN USING GAS TO FLUSH OUT THE SNAKES: TAKE A LARGE PACK OF MATCHES, IGNITE, AND THROW AT SUSPECT. PERHAPS I SOUND A TAD EXTREME, BUT I HAVE A HARD TIME GRASPING THE IDEA OF A "PRO-HERP" PERSON GOING TO ONE OF THESE EVENTS. ON THE OTHER HAND---PERHAPS A 5 DOLLAR SUPPORT DONATION IS WORTH THE AMMO YA MIGHT GET IF DECENT PICTURES OF THE ATROCITIES COMMITED ARE TAKEN. THIS IS A TOUGH SUBJECT......CAN'T WE JUST STEAL THE SNAKES AWAY IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT? ON THE SERIOUS SIDE---I DO HOPE SOMETHING POSITIVE COMES OUT OF THIS---PERHAPS AN ANTI-ROUNDUP SITE.
