My brother lives in the Missouri Ozarks. For the past 10 years or so in July (when the nights become warm) he has been experiencing an infestation of copperheads. As many as 5-8 will surround his house. He very patiently has tried to deal with them nonviolently, but lately has run out of patience. What may be causing this? His house is located in the middle of a mixed shortleaf-pine oak forest.

You should encourage him to do additional yard work to make the area less appealing. This might cut down on the frequency of appearance. I wish I had that problem. I live in a suburb where I am lucky to see a squirrel.

In warm weather cooperheads look for food at night. Maybe his trash barrels are attracting mice which in tuen draw the snakes? He might think of moving them away from the house a bit in summer. Or does her have any bird or animal feeders out? They too would draw rodents.

You should tell your brother to contact Dr. Stanley Trauth at the Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. He and his grad students have been working with copperhead aggregation for at least the past couple of years. There's a place in N. Cen. AR where copperheads gather in huge numbers every spring or summer. This sounds like it may be a similar phenomenon and I bet Dr. Trauth would be very interested in looking into it.
You can find various ways to contact him on this website: http://biology.astate.edu/faculty/strauth/Dr_%20Stanley%20Trauth.htm.
