Was getting a drink at school from the drinking fountain and guess what was underneath? Yep, a black widow. Bit me several times before I realized it and flicked it away. Didn't think much of it until 20 minutes later SEVERE muscle cramps. I WAS IN ABSOLUTE AGONY! There is no word in the English dictionary that can accurately describe the hell I went through. I could no longer walk and my speech was heavily blurred but they were able to rush me to Loma Linda Hospital. They gave me several shots of morphine and wanted to give me antivenom. The reason why they wanted to give it to me was because of the severe muscle fasiculations I was going through. At first I begged for it, but when the morphine kicked in and I discovered the antivenom could be more dangerous than the venom itself, I refused. I am still in severe pain as I type even though the bite was on Friday. I vomited several times in the hospital and don't remember too much. I have never been through so much hell in my life. I honestly wanted to die and get over it in the peak of all the pain. Hell and agony don't come close to describing what I went through. Folks, don't underestimate black widows. I would rather get nailed by a black mamba than have to go through that hell again.

WOW. SORRY TO HEAR THAT. GOOD LUCK WITH IT. YEA, WE'VE GOT A LOT OF THEM AROUND ME. I'VE SAID MANY TIMES I'D RATHER GET NAILED BY A COBRA THAN A WIDOW. GET WELL SOON. TAKE CARE.

Black Widows are VERY common where I am at. I have two on my desk now that I captured here in common areas around the school. I release them back in the woods a bit after I time to show them to my students and offer some words of caution. It is baseball/softball season here once again and the dugouts are a favorite location for them. I usually make a trip out to each field and collect and move the ones I find. Sort of out of appreciation their beauty as well as keeping my students and the spiders out of each others way. They are not particularly aggressive, but certainly not a species to take lightly.

Sorry to hear about your widow bite, Jahon. It can be a very unpleasent experience to go through.
Not only should folks watch out for Black Widow spideys, but also the introduced Brown Widow Latrodectus geometricus), and the Red Widow (Latrodectus bishopi). The venom of both of those is just as dangerous as that of the Black Widow.
I used to find hundred of Black Widows in the area where I live every year. However, the Brown Widow seems to have taken over. Now it is hundreds of Brown Widows that I am finding. They seem to be less picky about where they will live than the Black Widows, and Black Widows seem to be getting scarce. I wonder if the Brown Widows are eating all of the Black Widows ?
Best Regards

I've kept a few widows and have one right now. The other bite reports I've read sounded just like yours. That Latrotoxin packs a pretty good punch for a spider that isnt very big. I find it kinda wierd that it bit multiple times because everytime i move the cage mine is in she bolts to her corner and hides.

I beleive geometricus is bigger too. Latrodectus is my favorite spider genus easyily. If you've ever seen em take down a huge roach it's pretty awsome.
