New laws that limit private ownership of exotic wildlife don't go far enough yet, according to zookeepers.
Greater Vancouver Zoo spokesperson Jody Henderson says B.C.'s new Controlled Alien Species regulations are welcomed but "it's a small list, it needs to go a lot further."
The regulations prohibit private ownership of deadly animals such as tigers, pythons and alligators that are not already residing in the country. Existing owners will have a year to seek and get a permit from the environment ministry and won't be allowed to breed or release the animal.
A separate permitting system will apply to accredited zoos, research and educational institutions, as well as temporary permits for the film industry.
Henderson said that the new regulations address the black market for exotic animals and animal parts, but don't include many creatures such as exotic birds such as macaws and cockatoos which can outlive people and "should be listed" in the regulations.
All of the exotic birds at the zoo in Aldergrove are "orphans" which have been surrendered by, or seized from, private owners.
Henderson said the zoo also received a pair of African spurred tortoises three years ago, taken from a private owner who was incapable of providing proper care for them.
"They grow to be the size of a wheelbarrow and live to be 200. That's a ridiculous animal to own as a pet," said Henderson.
"The owners didn't know how to feed and care for them properly and as a result their shells have been permanently damaged. They're only seven years old."
Henderson often takes a massive African rock python "leather" with her on speaking engagements where she unrolls it to demonstrate the size that some creatures can grow to. This snakeskin was seized several years ago at the Canadian border and given to the zoo by the border agency as a public educational tool.

Don't you think the laws in the US are tough enough to combat without worrying about theones in Canada?

Karl, that is a very isolationist attitude you are proposing. It is like telling me I should only worry about what happens in Nevada and on the federal level.
I DO worry about what happens in other US states and Canada. Why? Because the AR groups pushing for these insane bans are all over the world and are connected and this insanity is spreading, What is happening Canada is an indicator what is coming to the locality near you in not so distant future. Treat the crap in Canada as foreshadowing of what will be coming the to the USA or what is already here in some communities.

I understand what you are saying, and again respectfully disagree.
The way laws are created, enforced, etc are radically different in each different country. I will never agree that comparing US laws to the laws of another country is a good idea.
We enjoy many more "freedoms" than any other country in the world. It is still woefully difficult to get people to participate in defending those freedoms.
As an example:
Canada "enjoys" socialized medicine which many in the US seem to envy.
What they don't realize is that socializing health care in Canada DID NOT raise the level of health care. It lowered it to the cheapest common denominator and made the "lines" for procedures that Americans take for granted. I am not just talking here. My mother was Canadian. I got to hear how she had to wait for treatment and wait to get a Doctor's appointment, etc.
I have and will continue to fight fo the freedoms in this country. Is that isolationist? Perhaps. But I have been called much worse for my views.

It seems to me that a person could disagree with something such as this without blatantly insulting others. To me this shows an "ignorance" and hostility that only reverberates through an entire community and puts everyone in a bad light. We don't want to be lumped in with a few bad reptile owners out there, yet we can degrade and lump others into a stereotype without a second thought. Classy.

My father was killed as a result of socialist Eastern Europe medicine when I was 11, he was 37.
I know Canadians who want to survive come to the USA for medical treatment, so I guess we agree on something: socialist medicine sucks.
However, these exotic laws are being proposed by the same people, AR idiots, so we need to watch and see what the AR are doing elsewhere.

Aquaherp, wouldn’t you agree that many stereotypes are based on some amount of the truth?
I will never be politically correct and because of my dislike of AZA, you will never like me, so lets just agree to tolerate each other in a polite manner.
And yes, I stand behind my position, most the people, at least in exotic mammal scamstuary community, pushing for exotic bans are middle aged to older women, many fat, who don’t have a life. That is a fact.

I don't recall having ever stating a word about a "dislike" for you because of your opinion of AZA.
My issue is that you claim to be representing the exotic animal ownership and show a very aggressive and insulting nature towards anyone who you don't happen to 100% agree with. This is why the rights of others fall so quickly, because it is easy to pull up a few of these posts and it appears to be nothing more than the uneducated rantings of someone with a bone to pick. It is not doing anyone in the exotic world any justice at all. Only a great deal or harm and it in and of itself tends to perpetuate that idea that we are all a bunch of backwoods hate mongers.

AH, my problem is NOT with people who disagree with me, my problem is with people who disagree with me while pushing their views/lifestyle on me. If they don’t want to own exotics/guns, fine, I will not force them to get them.
My issue is with people who are against guns/exotics and want to force me NOT to have them as well.
My issue is with people who want to remove my freedoms to choose and want me to live according to their rules. It is not a matter of disagreeing with me, they can disagree all they want, it is a matter of them attempting to remove my personal freedoms.
If that makes me hate monger, so be it.
What is the saying, if you are not making anybody angry, you are not doing a good job?
