http://www.dothaneagle.com/dea/lifestyles/local/article/shake_rattle_and_rodeo_opp_rattlesnake_rodeo_returns_for_49th_year/66534/
And:
http://www.rattlesnakerodeo.com/
"It started when a local dentist who loved to hunt quail wanted to get rid of the rattlesnakes inhabiting his hunting land and biting his bird dogs. He flushed gasoline into the large gopher holes rattlesnakes share with tortoises"
"Gas hasn’t been used to hunt snakes in 20 years, Childre said. Now, people just listen through a hose for a rattle and then hook the snake"
So, they are using 40 foot long snake hooks to reach the bottom of those Gopher Tortiose burrows ?
Best Regards

John, I wonder if the Special Guest Musicians actually realize the extent of damage they are supporting by putting their names on the Band Wagon.
As for the Hose & Hook Bit:
We all know that getting a Eastern Diamondback out of A Gopher Hole is literally impossible to do, even with a set of Tongs. They are only feeding on the Ignorance of people with this deal. I wish that anyone living local that has any interest in showing the people the truth about Opp,AL, would write a Article on this and publish it to Local and State Folks. Maybe it would help somewhat.
Almost makes me ashamed to call myself an Alabamian.
Be Safe Ya'll, Happy Herping : Wally

I have spoken to three people who hunt rattlesnakes for that particular roundup in Opp and all three still use gasoline.
I tried to inform them of the damage that gas does to all the animals lungs and how it soaks into the soil, leaving the burrow useless and deadly for years to come. None could give a dang about anything I said, and just referred back to the fact that they were just rattlesnakes and what good were they...
When people are that blatant and ignorant, you just have to hope they are sterile and cannot have children to raise up that way.
I am still waiting for the day we can have a feral cat roundup.
I boycott Opp and Dothan(home to all three of the a$$holes), and will never spend a penny in those two towns.

Knowing such musicians as I do, I doubt they realize much of anything. Never heard of any of these people though.... they must be hard-up for a gig indeed.

they 100% for sure use gasoline and are supported by the alabama fish and game also. a lot of the fish and game guys from that area are "hunting buddies" with the people who do most of the rattlesnake hunting. a lot of these snakes are taken from national parks also, a lot come from bankhead. this state is content knowing little or nothing about pretty much everything. that's how we roll.

John, the Opp Rattlesnake Roundup is attended by many, but not all in Alabama are supporters of it, or this type of activity. The ( Hook ) that is talked about in the article in the "Dothan Eagle" is not what the rest of us consider a Snake Hook, they are talking about a real Hook, like a fishing hook, these people will put on the end of the hose, several sets of "Treble" Hooks, and will hook the snake indiscriminately, anywhere on the body it reaches. This action is incomprehensible by those of us that are working to preserve these magnificent animals and educate the public on the importance of preserving them.
Of course, "money" plays an important role in this type of behavior. The price these people get "per foot" for the Rattlesnakes, spurs on the behavior of the ignorant!!!
The fact that it has been "against the law" here in Alabama to use "Gasoline" in the Gopher Tortoise Burrows for quite some time, is of little concern to most.
I am working constantly to educate the public about the preservation and conservation of the animals that are the center of our "hobby" or "interest" and sometimes, carriers.
I am conducting an "educational program" the 22nd and 23rd of this month, injunction with the fish and wildlife officers in this area, bringing in children from several area schools of diverse ages.
My hopes are to educate them while they are still young and maybe stop this incomprehensible behavior and preserve these Beautiful Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes before they are wiped of the face of the earth. Each and everyone of use should be working to reach out to the general public and educate them when ever the chance arises. Being good Stuarts of the animals and hobby we all love, is the responsibility of us all.
Respectfully yours in Alabama

snake hatred is tied closely to the churches and since most people in alabama pretend to be "church going folks", most also hate snakes. a LOT of the 50+ crowd reference the bible to prove that snakes are bad, and these aren't the whackos, just the ignorant people who decided never to think for themselves 40 years ago. this state is full of people who don't WANT to put thought into anything and a LOT of the ones who go grab a pet snake end up killing it or releasing it because they don't really LIKE snakes or RESPECT snakes, they just think they're cool.
this state is just too ignorant to ever change. it is what it is. naturally beautiful, culturally retarded.
