All this talk about dangerous animas as pets! Its getting old! Not to beat a dead horse, so to speak, but the family dog is an extremely dagerous animal. And any moron in the country can have one of those, regardless of age or experience. Now I know not all dogs are vicious killers, but they have the potential to be. Would someone Please look up the number of fatal, and severly disfiguring attacks from dogs? I bet there have been more canine related fatalities this year alone, then there have been from exotics in ten years. Just a thought, it might be an interesting statistic.

Regarding the seller not asking the age...Just wondering, isn’t there an age limit on having a credit card? They paid by credit card, so the assumption is it is somebody older, or somebody who still has adult supervision and is using parents’ credit card?

OK, here is the latest on : Human Fatalities Resulting From Dog Attacks in the United States, 1979–2005 By Ricky L. Langley :
http://www.wemjournal.org/wmsonline/?request=get-abstract&issn=1080-6032&volume=020&issue=01&page=0019
Regarding non human primates as pets and all the ‘sentient’ stuff, I have no desire to have primate pets, not even humans, to me kids are just hairy monkeys. But the small monkeys and lemurs (the ones with tail), can make good pets for dedicated owners, see REXANO flyer on small non human primates:.
http://www.rexano.org//Documents/primate_flyer.pdf
The apes (no tail), is a different story, especially NOT castrated males, but hey, some human males can fit in the problem category too;-)
Think about birds, should we ban caged pet birds? Or apartment dogs and cats, think feral cats and how big their territory is,...this can be a slippery slope.
In any case, there are 2 issues here (public safety and animal welfare) and some of you keep jumping form subject to subject, whatever fits your viewpoint at the moment, stay focused.
As for escaped tiger versus cobra, think about it, cobra is going to be more freaky, why? You can see a tiger form far away, how do u not see 400 pound animal. So you don’t mind reaching into your kitchen cabinet as the tiger can not hide there, but cobra could, so you get more paranoid with something you can not easily see but could be there. The suspense factor.
I know myself, living in the desert, that I get more alert early AM or before sunset when the rattlers go out. I am more focused on any movements, most of them is harmless lizards, birds or chipmunks, but I never know for sure, as I can not see the animal, just hear and see the plant movement after the animal run in the hole or hid under the dry plant matter.

That is a big problem, next time the news folks will probably have a 13 year old buy a mamba or tiapan.
Then watch what happens.
The dealer in Florida who sold the Gaboon viper should have taken a lot more time to determine if the purchaser was qualified to own that snake, or not.
Wether the purchase was Legal, or not, is not the issue. A dealer should be willing to walk away from a sale if they think the purchaser is not qualified to work with that animal.
Best Regards

Repost of my http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/shhs/

Funny, A Planet is running Bush gardens venomous snake segment while I write this...pit viper feeding...

Z wrote on SHHS yahoogroups:
think about the scenario in real life the media wants to scare public about, the seller not asking the age:
1.ten year old kid successfully orders viper online,
2.because the seller didn’t check his fake ID
this young kid happens to have a working credit card too
3. Somewhat (magic occurs) kid transport himself to the air port, which we know tends to be on the outskirts of city
4.ten year old kid is walking thru the airport and cargo area without an adult supervision, while air port guards are looking at him and don’t think it is weird, Kid comes to the cargo counter to pick up his venomous viper , shows his fake ID to the counter clerk, who gladly gives mi his new venomous pet, and all of this happens without anybody getting suspicious????

Don't forget these are the same news crews that do in depth reports on the lizard man. Wonder if he is considered a native or exotic species.
What a joke got to love the news propaganda more bs that means nothing.
Why don't they go into the city and show how easy you can acquire an illegal fire arm or drugs. Wonder what they will go after next? They should try a classic like white lightning:) Hold on before that happens someone send me a gallon or three.
Be safe
