We live outside of Tampa, Florida in a heavy area of conservation. Our 3 year old dachshund was healthy one day, and late the next was found in her doghouse dead. She had blood coming from her nose and anus. The vet said possible pigmy rattler bite, but no bite mark was found. Due to the children't hysteria, we didn't take her to the vet, only called on the phone, thus the vet didn't actually see her. Does this phone diagnosis sound correct?

Let me first say, I am saddened by your loss. I have 3 small dogs myself. As far as the diagnosis, it definitely could be the case. I don't know the particulars of where you live, but there are Eastern Diamondbacks, Pigmy rattlesnakes and Cottonmouths in that region of Florida - all pitvipers. Blood from the nose and anus would definitely be symptoms of pitviper envenomation. Your dog was a small breed, and was not likely to survive a bite by any of these 3 snakes.
