Man Leads Police On Chase Into Brush Containing A Rattlesnake
Updated: June 8, 2009 05:58 PM PDT
CORPUS CHRISTI - Some police officers spent most of the morning searching for a man who led them on a brief chase near Labonte Park.
It happened about 8:30 a.m. Monday morning when an officer tried to pull over a black Oldsmobile for a traffic violation and the driver sped off.
The chase only lasted about two minutes before the driver, a Hispanic male, abandoned his car near Sharpsburg Road and ran into the brush.
Several additional units were called to the scene to help search for the guy, but everyone was pulled out when one of the officers spotted a rattlesnake in the brush.
A DPS helicopter was then brought in to search the area, but there's been no sign of the man.
"It's not a violent crime or anything like that so the risk that the officers run of getting a rattlesnake bite or something like that in there is not worth sending them into that brush, whereas someone like DPS can utilize a helicopter and look for him from above for us and we don't run those risks of getting the officer injured," CCPD Capt. James Brandon said.

Absolutely rediculous.
If a suspect runs after a MINOR traffic violation, wouldn't that raise some red flags for you? Wouldn't you (being a noble officer of the law) at least try to give chase? Really, given the MANY extremely dangerous situations that police officers (God bless them) find themselves in...rattlesnakes in the brush offer minimal danger. In fact, we need to train our criminals to be more polite, like rattlesnakes. If a police officer runs across a bad guy the bad guy should be required to shout out "here I am, I'm a bad guy and I have a gun. Look at me, here I am. Right here" prior to taking a shot at the police officer. :)
