IF the report confirmed "suffocation" and not strangulation - are they suggesting the snake escaped from its enclosure, snuck down the hallway, crept into this little girls bedroom and sat on her face???
Surly in todays forensic science the difference could be easily determined. I would hate to think that someone could possibly get away with murder (be it accidental or not) because of an ignorance of snakes.

Death by "suffocation" WOULD implicate the snake, since that's how pythons kill-they tighten their coils around the victim's body, usually around the thorax, so that the victim is unable to breath, and therefore suffocates. Strangulation, on the other hand, would suggest that an object was pulled tight around the throat. Contrary to popular myth, large constrictors do not target the neck and don't "choke" people.
This crack-head guy, by the way, was NOT even the child's father. He was just a live-in boyfriend who was shacking up with the "baby mama" at the time. MOST cases of death by child abuse result from a male who is not the child's biological father, but usually a step-father or just a live-in boyfriend. It would not surprise me in the least if that's what happened here, but for most people, it's easier to believe a killer snake did it than to believe a guy would kill a two-year-old child.

Pittbullady, you are correct - the point I was trying to make (and apparently wasnt too clear) was that it seems to me that it would be easy to determine if an 8ft constrictor did the strangling/suffocating (whatever) or by way of human hands or other object (rope, belt, pillow, etc.)
I would think with marginal effort the snake could be ruled out (unless in fact it actually did it)- (such as being placed on the 2yr old and provoked somehow for the purpose of killing her).
If the situation with the step dad is as you describe - I am sure dear ole mom will have another one soon enough. :)

Do remember that a Mother lost a child here, and even a crack addict loves there children. Second, Would the regulation described above be that bad ? Large constrictors are in fact as dangerous as venomous. If there is a process in place to acquire them, would a crack head not be to lazy to go threw it ? I live in Texas, So the only news I get here is from this board. Can any one post a link to some recent news articles that cover this sad storey ?
