Watch out: There's another croc on the loose

TRUMBULL -- If Canada geese suddenly start disappearing here and the predator leaves a slimy scaly trail behind, police and state Department of Environmental Protection officials say the culprit may be a croc -- as in crocodile.
Trumbull Deputy Police Chief Michael Harry says police launched an investigation Monday after a two-and-half foot-long crocodile, alligator or caiman was spotted in the vicinity of Twin Brooks Park. It has yet to be captured.
"It was hanging out in the [Pequonnock] River near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge on White Plains Road," Harry said. "It was floating on top of the water with its mouth open."
The reptile is described as dark green or black. The water where it was sighted is about three feet deep and has a moderate current.
"This looks like a 'copy croc' case. This is like 'Ground Hog Day,' you know, it's deja vu all over again" DEP Spokesman Dennis Schain quipped. Two weeks ago, another reptile, a footlong alligator was captured in Canoe Brook Lake. "Who would have thought that Trumbull was such an exotic reptile haven?"
In Connecticut, it is legal for people to own crocodiles, provided they obtain a DEP permit to possess them. Exactly, how many crocodiles, alligators or caimans call someone's house their home is unclear. Schain says the DEP has no idea. That's because the DEP has never issued any permits for crocodile possession. Nobody, Schain says, has ever applied for a permit to keep

this type of exotic animal.
But that doesn't mean there aren't crocodiles in our midst.
"People may have them. They might keep them in their basements or their backyards out of sight," Beardsley Zoo Director Gregg Dancho said. "They might be very low-key about them."
Trumbull Police Officer Jay Leos who investigated the reptile sighting, searched for the croc near Twin Brooks Park. He attempted to draw the reptile to show itself, by dropping some raw chicken liver into the river. After about 10 minutes, he saw a pair of bulging eyes rise out of the water on the opposite bank, he stated in a report released by the Trumbull Police Department. The reptile appeared to be an "alligator on the south east shore next to a large rock," Leos said in his report. "As I concentrated my [flash]light in that direction the eyes disappeared under water and I was unable to locate it again."
Given the river's current, it's possible that the reptile could swim down to Beardsley Park in Bridgeport, a distance of about three miles.
Beardsley Zoo's director believes the reptile probably is somebody's discarded pet.
"Buying an alligator or a crocodile is usually an impulse purchase," Dancho said. "People have a certain affinity with reptiles. There's nothing wrong with owning them if you understand the policies and procedures for handling that animal. Otherwise they can be dangerous."
What zookeepers like Dancho, conservationists and animal rescuers see is that the novelty of an exotic pet wears off, the demands for care overwhelm their owners. When that happens, they say, exotic pet owners sometimes abandon these animals, tossing them into the water, if they are a reptile, or set them loose to fend for themselves, rather than contacting a zoo or a wildlife sanctuary.
Concerned about the types and numbers of exotic pets being turned loose in Connecticut, the DEP is sponsoring a pet amnesty day, July 25, at Beardsley Zoo, with "no questions asked" on the legality of the animals turned in.
"Mostly what we want to do is to make people think before they buy these kinds of animals," Dancho said. "We want to discourage people from buying animals for pets that they will not be able to handle for the long haul."۩

I personally don't see much wrong with this article. This isn't you're typical AR "no pets at all" stance. The guy quoted even says he's fine with people keeping them as long as they know how to deal appropriately with the animal. That's the same thing we say here and on various other reptile websites all the time. So where's the problem with this one?
Now whether the animals were actually there or not is another matter. I can't say it would be impossible that someone would dump off an alligator when they realized just how long they would be taking care of it (longer that they live if cared for properly) or the size of enclosure it's going to require. Don't believe people dump off unwanted exotic pets? I'm not sure how many students have told me they just released their leopard gecko or ball python, etc when they got tired of it or the parents finally said get rid of it. Of course I shake my head and go into all the reasons that is wrong, but the deed is usually done. Fortunately our winters here in AR are sufficient to wipe out most exotic herps.
Anyway, don't always shoot the messenger on these kinds of articles. Sometimes, such as in this case, they make some very good points.

Hey chance, OK, here is it, the bull in Trumbull:
Other than we have too many stupid articles lately, thsi one might have so intelligent sentences, but at soem sections the article reads like bad script for Crocs on the plane, see the catchy phrases, if they didn't say it was only little over 2 feet, I would have imagined monster croc from hell:
<<...police launched an investigation..."It was floating on top of the water with its mouth open." ..."This looks like a 'copy croc' case. This is like 'Ground Hog Day,' you know, it's deja vu all over again " DEP Spokesman Dennis Schain quipped. Two weeks ago, another reptile, a footlong alligator was captured..., he saw a pair of bulging eyes rise out of the water...

Yeah I admit some of the descriptive narrative is a bit over the top, but keep in mind the information is being filtered down through a reporter/writer that has to keep the audience interested. If it was all cut and dry, the editor would probably not let it through. I did really like the "slimy trail" the alligator/crocodile might leave behind....lol.
And no I haven't bought one of those yet. Maybe I should and put it at the front of my classroom to make sure my kids always keep our great leader in their thoughts... Hah, totally kidding. All you right wingers out there lower your guns ;) I don't indoctrinate my students into the Democratic Party, I just recruit for the gay agenda.

Well Chance, don't worry about our unloaded guns, we right wingers spend so much time in long ammo lines, and by the time it is our turn, the shelves are empty. Sorry that we therefore don't have time at the moment to help you in your pro exotic fight to legalize gerbils in California;-)

Keep in mind, my students aren't reptile people, just normal people who occasionally keep reptiles as pets. And on more than one occassion I've had them tell me they just release them when they get tired of them. Not sure what you're implying about me getting all the rotten apple students though. Care to elaborate? I mean my 7th graders last year were turds, but the others were pretty good for the most part!

Every time you get the chance to defend some left wing idea you jump on it.It gets old.We enjoy venomous snakes and I think at some point you did.It just gets old.I simply do not believe you.Your statement alone is fuel for AR.I think my agenda and yours are worlds apart .You as a teacher have the ability to change the world one mind at a time an awesome thing in its self. What we say here affects the minds of young and old alike. This site is for the RIGHT to keep venomous. You seem to be on the opposite side of every issue we have.So at this point I WILL AGREE TO DISAGREE .I choose not to insult you and if I have I apologize .I just simply dislike the posts you have made in the past.Rarely do you give any positive feed back from my point of view.
