I know this really isn't the right place for this post, but I was wondering,,, when do black rat snakes loose their juvenile patterns? Is it based on age, or growth? My dad found the one pictured in his chicken coop late one night. I told him to do anything he could to annoy it and make it leave. It worked, but it returned during the night and consumed one of his banty chickens. He was going to kill it but I convinced him to hold it for me and it has since been relocated to north Georgia. I have encountered many black rats over the years, but this was the largest I have ever seen, still showing it's juvenile patterns. This snake measured nearly 7 feet.
thanks

Some never do.As good practice NEVER RELOCATE A SNAKE FROM ITS HOME.You could introduce parasites or disease to another area.

In many parts of the South, Black Rats retain some pattern for their entire lives. I've caught 6-7 footers that still have plenty of noticeable pattern, and indeed, where I live, in the Midlands of South Carolina, we NEVER find a really black specimen that doesn't have a clear pattern on it, regardless of size. I've got several adults right now, all wild-caught, ranging in size from two feet to six feet, and recently lost an old, old male that was a good 7 feet, minus most of his tail. The only one that is really black is a specimen from the "Up-State", around the western NC border, and she's just a youngster about 2 feet long. I have seen and owned several snakes from the southwestern part of the state, around the Augusta, GA-Aiken County area, that showed a lot of Gray Rat influence and were likely natural intergrades, just as those along the SC and NC coastal plain usually show some Yellow Rat features.

When I lived in NE TN the black rats were mostly all black as adults, but I live in GA now and I have found several 5+ footers that still have plenty of grey pattern, I guess it depends on locality perhaps.
