Thrills of a Naturalist's Quest is my favorite Ditmars book. It's not always just about snakes, but it's the best of all of them from a storytelling perspective Another inspiring piece for a 13 year old: Oxford American has a good profile of Dean Ripa, describing how he got started (I think it's available online)...

We intervened already before it became an issue. He can enjoy my collection from the window in the door for now. He also has a few kings to take care of at this time. At this time it is a healthy obsession.

Two that have not been mentioned that are worthwhile are
In Search of REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS by Richard D. Bartlett, and Life, Love, And Reptiles, an autobiography of Sherman A. Minton, Jr., M.D.

Adam, if you can find the Oxford article on Dean Ripa online, please post the address here.
I have been looking for it, and so far, all I can find are vendors who are selling that issue of the magazine.
Best Regards

a couple more came to mind just now:
snake charmed - coffee table size book with great, great pictures not of snakes themselves, but of their depiction in the arts (painting, 19th century audobon style surveys, tribal masks and thrones, pharaonic curios, even weird, fantastic fin de siecle period jewelry). i know it sounds a little esoteric, but the text is straightforward and is a great summation of our collective snake obsession over the millennia. i bought on amazon for a penny (+$3.99 shipping).
serpens - a beautifully produced, sleek book that just came out last year. gorgeous photos. the format's the same throughout: snakes (sometimes just two, sometimes 30) are placed in a black square receptacle and fill up the entire page. each spread is another snake, often in great color phase. id's and support text are relegated to the back (which may make it a cool way to test yourself--or your 13 year old--on identifying species.) not all 'hot' by any means. i've shown this to friends who feel icky/uncomfortable with snakes and every one of them has come away awed and a little converted...
