Are snakes more likely to bite during the activities of mating season , and would this be seen as heightened aggression.

I would say no, as they are focused on mating/finding a mate. I've seen water snakes mating in the wild, and they didn't care that my wife, dog and myself were right there. Not the case if they weren't mating.

Only if you're another male snake. Even then (between two male snakes) its more wrestling than anything else.
