OXFORD — Authorities on Monday afternoon arrested the mother of a 2-year-old Sumter County girl who was strangled to death in July by a 9-foot Burmese python, charging her and her boyfriend with third-degree murder, manslaughter of a child and felony child abuse.
Contrary to prior reports, the arrest affidavits state the snake was owned by the girl's mother, 19-year-old Jaren Hare, not her live-in boyfriend, Charles Darnell.
Darnell awoke July 1 to find the pet missing. He found it in Shaiunna Hare's room, on top of her. Darnell, who is not Shaiunna's father, freed the girl by stabbing the snake with a 6-inch knife and a meat cleaver.
Injured, the snake released the child and slithered away inside the home. In a call to 911 at about 9:40 a.m. July 1, an unidentified man sobs as he tells the operator what happened.
"The baby's dead," he says. "Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby."
A medical examiner's report concluded Shaiunna Hare died of asphyxiation.
At the time of Monday's arrest, Darnell was in custody on a drug charge. At 5 p.m., the Sumter County Sheriff's Office was in the process of arresting Jaren Hare, a spokesman said.
Interviews with family members and friends revealed that the snake was not kept in a secure enclosure, as mandated, and repeatedly escaped prior to the girl's death, authorities said. Friends of the family even offered to keep the snake locked in a cage, but the mother and boyfriend declined.
"It's just a tragic set of circumstances that due to the reckless conduct on behalf of adults, a small child lost her life," said Assistant State Attorney Peter Magrino, a homicide prosecutor.

So does this mean that the death was staged to look like the python killed the child?

Well, 3'rd degree murder probably means that they do not have enough evidence to prove that the murder was intentional.
If they had the evidence, it would have been 1'st degree murder.
I also find it interesting that they describe the 911 call as being from a "unidentified man" saying the snake had killed the baby. Would they have not tried to determine if the call came from the boy friend ?
And first, the snake belongs to the live in boyfriend, and now it belongs to the kids mom ?
And we have others coming out of the woodwork talking about how the snake got out a lot of times ?
All I can say, is were these trashy folks living in a single wide, or a double wide ?
Best Regards

3rd degree murder is what they get on folks who's kids have gun accidents,as well as those who's dogs get out and kill people. Drunk drivers get this charge allot to. It leaves the prosecutor some leeway for what they want to do as far as sentencing. My bet is that the Mother will get a few months and a couple years probation, and boyfriend will get in more trouble for the dope.

Sorry about the trailer thing Archie, I am just kidding.
I have lived in trailers also, and might be living in one again in the near future.
Most folks with trailers have nice yards, and keep them kept up and repaired.
But, every now and then, you will drive past a trailer park that seems to have attracted every low life in the county. Those places are where the term trailer trash comes from. Driving through those places is like visiting a third world country. And those python folks in Florida just sound like they might be part of that kind of place.
Best Regards
