I am looking for a mentor, someone experienced with venomous snake handling that is willing to help a beginner. Who is willing to help pass down this time honored tradition? I am willing to travel for your location. Please email me @ bkusp@hotmail.com if you are interested.
I am currently volunteering at a reptile house. Their collection includes Agkistrodon contortrix. However, the management will not allow me to come in contact with this snake for insurance reasons.
I am very serious about this. I put a lot of effort into getting my foot in the door at this reptile house and now they will not let me near the one snake that I am there to learn about. I am running out of options.

It sucks when someone wants to do it right and then can't find the help he needs.Wish I could help ya, but I'm in GA. Keep looking, there's bound to be someone in your area that can help you out.

He does state he will travel, lol, but I'm guessing there is a point. I also would offer but I'm even further.

Liability issues are why I no longer do this sort of thing. You may sign a paper waving the right to sue, but that would not stop another family member from filing suit. Besides,if someome got bit at my facility and the press got hold of it. That would put an end to my collection also.
I was an principal instructor at a 3 day AAZK (American Association of Zoo Keepers) sponsored "Venomous handling and husbantry workshop" where only the principal instructors were allowed to handle the venomous snakes, for exactly the same reasons.
