I have talked about this with Steve B of SCDNR for several years now. This will be nothing but good for the future of the venomous hobby. Steve tells me they are doing this to help regulate some of the irresponsible keepers not that there are many here but believe me there are a few. He has stated in the past that they were trying to base these regulations to be similar to FLA and NC like Andrew said earlier. I am looking forward to this and welcome it with open arms.

As long as it won't negatively impact the shows, I don't have an issue with it. I'd hate to see the shows in SC become like the ones in GA or NC, where you're so limited in what you can sell, but at the same time, it sends a positive message to the general public that WE, the reptile owners/breeders/keepers, are being proactive and policing ourselves. The thing to watch for though, once this bill makes it to subcommittee, is that lawmakers will want to either keep adding species or tighten restrictions to the point that very few people will be able to afford keeping these animals. Very few bills make it through without modification; we all know that. When it comes to snakes, fear often prevails over knowledge.

that is our job at USARK to keep this bill true to its original intent. without the AR folks driving this debate there will be no reason for it to stray much. that is why it was so important for the herp community to come up with our own model. the previous vaccume was ripe for AR to come in with their model and do all the driving. Not any more! now the Reptile Nation steers the course.

Andrew I have so many questions for you, I have no idea where to start.
I will be emailing you first of the week with those questions. I want to ponder on this over for a few days.

Why put laws in place when we are fine the way we are? Sc is a great state to live in with exotic animals because we dont have a lot of restrictions so why put them in place now?

Thomas, the reason for putting laws in place now, allows USARK and reptile keepers to have a large voice on what is in those laws. Once a law is in place, it is much more difficult to change.
If you wait until the AR folks put on a big push, and find folks in the SC Legislature to support anti reptile laws, it makes it much more difficult to win and get the laws we would like to see.
We have a great advantage in helping create the laws that will determine how we do business in SC.
If we do not police ourselves in the Reptile Industry, others will come in and do the policing for us.
Best Regards

John and Andrew are right. If your state is one of the few that are "unregulated", it won't be for much longer. All it takes is ONE session in the state legislation to change that courtesy of the ARA's. Time to be proactive.

The weird part of this whole thing is that I have never talked to this Representative who introduced the Bill. We were approached by the Senate after that news station ran that hoax some months ago buying a hot snake over the internet. We showed them what we had done in NC and never heard anything back. The state for whatever reason (probably the python scare)has decided they are going to do something. At least the didn't introduce API's ban bill. There is nothing in our bill that will stop business as usual in SC. Not the shows and not responsible keeping. Some may have to tighten up a little, but all in all many are already very responsible and running a pretty tight ship. If you cant take these simple precautions you may need to ask if you are in the right hobby. All this amounts to is best industry management standards... something that most industries strive for.

I agree, that legislation seems to be a good thing as it is written. A law is eventually going to get passed, and that is a far cry better than a total ban.
