i heard from a friend just back from kenya that the rangers at watamu wear shiny thumbtacks in their boot soles to confuse spitters' aim. but i've also heard they're not so easily fooled and know eye shine from a decoy. anyone have a hunch/experience here?
also, i've heard that - broadly speaking - asian spitters give a more liberal, less accurate spray than african varieties. any thoughts here?

My personal experience has been that they are not fooled easy. While I can extract more from the Asian spitters, they are both quite accurate and generous when riled.

Doug is right they are hard to fool. Naja nigricollis in our collection have yielded 1 gram of venom in an extraction far surpassing any of the asia animals for yield.

thanks for the (humbling) feedback. generous indeed.
i'm really gonna betray my ignorance here, but i'm assuming that that's always a defensive move and evolved as such? don't suppose there are recorded instances of them going for the eyes of prey items? or would doing so likely induce a lot of unhelpful thrashing about in the would be victim?
thanks again for your insights...

Defensive. Would have no place in obtaining food. We have 25 Naja nigricollis some about 7 ft. These animals as juveniles have huge heads with large venom glands.

I like the one I have Jim.He has a large head and a gray body ,red throat. He has never spread a hood or spit,Tho I know he will still very young an o9 from glades. One thing I do notice is if I feed too much he will expell the extra pinkie in a day or two.So I ASKED ABOUT IT ON THE sa FORUM AND THAT IS WHAT THEY DO WHEN OVER FED.I will only feed it a single pink every few days now and it is doing fine.I can not wait for him to turn black.A large and majestic snake these guys are.I have been researching there bite and it is highly necrotic .The photos are scary ..

True if you over feed they will not keep it down. But if there is food they will keep eating until they throw up. Adults when harassed will also throw up as part of a defensive reaction.
